the Allman Joys?

yeah,I always liked that name...they were teenagers and gigged in Nashville at the Briarpatch Club when they were in town, this was their hometown...and they considered it that way even after moving to Fla.
They were good even then,Duane was so good that I read an interview with Chet Atkins, where he mentioned that he "loved that Allman kid"..and told about his daughter insisting that he go with her to the club to watch Duane play...he said that Duane had such good coordination between his hands, one thing is that Duane was lefthanded and played right handed, people like that have lots of strength in their fretting hand.
You see...there's a reason that Duane Allman lit a fire under Clapton's arse when the Layla album was being recorded...much has been said about it...even by Eric himself.

Ha! As a left-hander who plays right-handed I keep a little list of others who do the same: Knopfler, Gary Moore, etc. But I never knew that about Duane before. Thanks for the info!

Yes! I have always thought it would be better fretting with your dominant hand...do you think so Ceri?
I have a brother-in-law who is a professional musician who plays that way because as a kid his father made him learn "the correct way".

Well, I'm here to prove that it couldn't get any worse, at any rate!

Frankly, I'm in no position to make any claims whatsoever as far as technique is concerned. After all these years I can usually manage to play in the right key: that's progress!

Though seriously, I've never got on with a pick in my non-dominant hand. That always feels like trying to write with a pen in the wrong hand to me. That's why I'm a fingers-and-thumb picker and I have an unproven theory the same probably applies to Knopfler. Is Jeff Beck left-handed too, I wonder?

Accurate picking didn't seem to be any problem for Duane though, huh? 8)

Cheers - C

Interesting....one of the reasons Duane's slide playing was so impressive was that he didn't use a pick...he finger picked the notes and dampened the strings to keep out unwanted noises....that style came into play when he was using a pick also,at times he would finger pick a flurry of notes in between picking with a pick.

I saw Duane and Gregg play when they were known as "Hourglass". I had their one-and-only album too (on vinyl).

Oh wow.... Yeah, Clapton is on my "bucket list" of people to see in concert. I have to see him live in concert before I leave this earth. 8)

I saw the Stones in 2005 at UVA Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia. Great show, but, due to $$$ ticket prices $$$ we were waaaay out there/up there in the nosebleed section.

Since Twelvebar mentioned Rik Emmett in the post above, I wanted to add this...
Best concert overall: Triumph at The Aud in Buffalo, New York back (I think) in 1983 or '84 or something. Those guys freakin' ROCKED! 8) Rik Emmett blew my mind as a guitar player. Back then, I had heard of him but only heard one or two Triumph songs on the radio. The pyrotechnics and lasers, flashpots, flame throwers, and stuff were a bit over the top, but, they put on a heck of a show. Rik Emmett did it all... 6 string electric, semi-hollow body electric, 6/12 double neck, and of course, the highlight of the show: He came out alone, center stage, sat on a stool with a classical acoustic guitar and said something like, "The guys said I could take a moment and have a little fun, so here's an acoustic guitar piece"... and blew everyone's mind by playing the most incredible, most beautiful, classical guitar I have ever heard! You sat back thinking to yourself "wait a minute... wasn't this dude just running all around on stage, playing the most blistering rock guitar solos, whammy bar harmonics, dropping to his knees, etc...? Wow - this guy can play!!!"

+1!

Rik Emmett is both under-rated and under-appreciated.

I have to say, it really upsets me that Michael Hedges was a 'wrong 'un'

If he played that thing the wrong way round for him......what the hell hope have I???

as a side note, I use cutlery the wrong way round even though I am right handed and, for some reason, can't swing a golf club right handedly....................

Yeah...they went out to California to record that album and do shows at places around LA where all the other hippies were playing....after they got nowhere the band split, leaving Gregg who was under contract to record some more stuff...I have those albums on vinyl,Hourglass, and one with Gregg and some big orchestra. I don't know how they sounded when you heard them RJ but I'll bet they were a lot better than the stuff on record, because the stage always was their element.
The transformation from the Hourglass period to the Allman Brothers Band was amazing,Duane had the vision.

LOL...

Sounds like me. Let's face it - maybe I'm a little weird... :P

Guitar - right handed.
Drums - left handed (high hat on the right, floor tom on the left, tom toms reversed as well. Kick bass drum w/ left foot).
Handwriting, eating, using power tools - left handed.
Golf - right handed.
Tennis racket - right handed.
...and now really bizarre:
Baseball (throw) - left handed.
Baseball (bat) - right handed.
Football (pass) - right handed.
Football (punt) - left footed.
