As anybody who knows me will tell you, I like the guy's music but can't really stand him as an individual (too much of the hippy-dippy pseudo-mysticism bull crap for my tastes).

Now, he's in the news again, speaking his mind (a God-given right we all have, no matter what country we are from or are in...) about immigration laws recently passed in Georgia and Arizona.

This will undoubtedly devolve into a political discussion, but I'm approaching it from this angle; why do celebrities think we care about their opinions?

wow - i was just going to start a thread on this

i'm really tired of santana- linda rondstadt- the dixie chicks -and others who feel they have to share their views with us in a concert situation. i go to hear music - leave the rest of it at home. there are people i would not see in concert just for this reason.

carlos and others - just shut up and play

Good on you Mr. Armadillo, I care a lot about immigration laws in this country. The last thing our economy needs are more illegal's climbing fences and taking entry level work from our own citizen's. In my opinion celebrities that openly support such activity are commiting TREASON. We need to care about celebrity opinion simply because they carry a lot of weight. :)

I for one don't give a tinker's damn for celebs who think they're smarter than the rest of us....most of them couldn't hold down a 40 hr. a week job.
But then again, lots of people in this country are stupid and can't hold down a job...or won't.

I think it's because they believe they have a platform of adoring fans, waiting on every word they drop as pearls of wisdom...

Much the same as Sports Players, Movie Stars, etc. They all make me laugh.

Yeah....actors make a living by being someone they're not and being good at it....they could tell most of those adoring fans anything and they believe it.

agreed - while she talks about how badly the "poor" have it, why doesn't she keep her concert prices reasonable enough for joe sixpack to afford? surely her millions could help- doesn't she have enough money?

yea - fly in a private jet to tell us about saving the earth

ok - off my soapbox for a bit

I'm really apolitical, so I see hipocracy from both sides. In the end, while they have freedom of speech, they need to put a filter in place...because of some peoples' comments--whether they were right or wrong--they have shot themselves and their bandmates in the foot.

Oh absolutely!

There's plenty of BS from both sides of the political spectrum. No one party has a monopoly on that!

mr. armadillo sir. you obviously don't understand. what mr. santana failed to mention is the months he has spent on the southern borders getting a first hand account of what is happening. you know, the murder that happens almost every day from law enforcement and border patrol. these drug cartels are just hard working folks trying to make a living. who are we to deny them that?

I don't mind celebs such as John Lennon,George Harrison,Donovan and others using their fame to spread the message for the need of world peace, basic human rights, and to end poverty and hunger but when they espouse their political beliefs whether right-wing,left-wing or right down the middle that's overstepping it.

There are many artists that I use to enjoy who have ruined it for me with their big mouths and now I,ll catch hell but this includes the Beatles. Also one of my all time fav,s Ted Nugent even though I agree with his stand on things It turns me off. He need to stick to hunting and playin the guitar.

if Carlos thinks America, the great nation that has allowed him to become rich, is such a bad place then he is welcome to take his scrawny Che Guevara loving arse somewhere else. maybe he would like to read up a bit and educate himself on the Mexican constitution and how they handle illegal immigration into their nation before trying to take a stance on how poorly the USA handles illegals in our country. Once an artist takes a stance like this, especially an ignorant one like this, I'm done with them.
