If you are just starting out, I suggest you learn how to tune a guitar to drop C. Guitar is just like anything, you need to crawl before you can walk or run, and learning how to tune a guitar is one of the crawling steps, or at least I consider it to be...

This is where I don't like the robot or VG guitars. It makes people too lazy to bother to learn how to tune a guitar to the tuning they want. Instead they just want to push a button. What are they going to do if they're playing a non digital guitar? Or (gasp!) an acoustic!?

the only guitar that would likely have drop C built in is the robot from gibson, so unless you want to shell out that much for something you can easily do, be my guest, but for that price you could get 2 american strats and jsut keep one in drop C if you wanted too, although its not that hard to tune to it

True. What's worse, music theory (that is, learning how it all works) can wind up going out the window. Like was already said, best to get two guitars and use one for alternative tunings-and definitely learn to tune for them, that's part of the learning process!

It seems like I remember a few aftermarket gizmos back in the early to mid-'90's that would allow you to do alternative tunings at the flip of a switch or the press of a button. I wonder what happened to them? And no, I'm not talking about drop-D tuners or B-benders.

I remember some EVH gadget that gave you drop d at the flip of a switch.

yeah, the "d-tunah" or something like that, which seems worthless because drop d takes about 3 seconds to tune into

Yes. Actually, I meant aftermarket items that (if I remember correctly) fit behind the bridge and would change the tuning of ALL six strings if you wanted to. They seem to have gone the way of the Dinosaur. They came out when 'alternative' tunings (not just dropped tunings) were all the rage.

Drop-D tuners aren't all that uncommon on basses (the Tony Franklin Fender P-Bass has a Hipshot D-tuner as standard), and the B-bender and Bigsby 'palm pedal' system have been around for decades, though very few players seem to use the 'palm pedal'.
