I learned a long time ago, Guitar Center is in the business of making money. Period. Thewy could care less about the musicians, With the exception of my millionaire friend, to whom they kiss butt and give great deals to. It is because they know he has money and will return everytime he needs something. Ebay and Craigslist is, in most cases, the way to go !
Just my humble opinion.
Good luck!

my biggest hope for this thread is that people are learning something and that my buddy bill doesnt think we are kicking him in the ballz, and thats the most important of the two.

No worries on my end. I'm just chuckling over the number of people who questioned why I was making such a big deal out of this, yet the thread is now up to 5 pages and 64 posts. :D

why ask why? just relish in it lol.
i was just thinking the same thing about the # of pages bill. i just didnt want you to think you were being bashed. when people start to express their opinions things can get foggy ya know. again just becasue someone disagrees, it doesnt mean your wrong and they are right ya know. this has been a great post in my opinion. lots of different views have surfaced on a post that wasnt a big deal from the begining. i just wanted to make sure you werent feeling sour about this post. if you were i have a team of professional hijakers
that i could call in on a moments notice to relieve the heat.
(zz doc, rebelsoul, nevin, SA, me, just to name a few lol)

To the best of our knowledge and belief, our resident millionaire friend doesn't frequent that venue. The gear he buys can't be found there. He has that certain je ne sais quoi characteristic of the crew he hangs out on the corner with.

I like cheap guitars. I like to buy them cheap then mod them with parts from Guitar Fetish. I've done that three times now and the results have been great. So whenever I visit my local Guitar Center I check out their used guitars for something really cheap. Today I thought I found the ideal project, but walked out empty handed and shaking my head in disbelief.

I found a black Peavey Strat copy with a single bridge humbucker. The body was scratched up and there were two chunks taken out of the edges. Nothing that some wood filler, new coat of Krylon paint and some polish wouldn't fix. The neck was a little bowed but it seemed to tune up and intonate ok. Chrome hardtail bridge and chrome tuners. Cheap humbucker.

The price? $39.00 with gig bag. I figured I had enough parts left over from previous projects that I could rebuild it and set it up for slide (if the neck wouldn't flatten out) for almost nothing. Knowing from past conversations with GC staff that they sell used stuff for twice what they pay for it, I approached the manager and offered him $30 cash plus I would buy a new set of strings, and they could throw away the gig bag.

His response: "You want the guitar, you pay the price on the tag."

Wow. I put it back and wandered around the store some more. Later I saw the manager at the desk and approached him again. I said to him:

"Are you saying that you would turn down a cash offer of $30.00 for a guitar you probably paid $20.00 for?"

His response: "That's exactly what I am saying." Whereupon he turned his back on me.

I said: Wow. You're quite the businessman aren't you. I'll be sure to spend more of my money here."

Then I walked out.

I'm still scratching my head that he would be willing to pass on an immediate cash sale that still nets him a profit plus I buy strings.

Wow.

bluesky636, interesting observation/story. if you are there again tell him to keep the gig bag. (careful with the neck and it should be OK)

Nah, not at all. I'm one of the worst when it comes to gassing for new guitars. Cheap or not, I like a good deal mysellf. When something like this happens to me, I just tell myself "Eh, I guess it wasn't meant to be for me to have this".

There's a saying that goes, " When is a deal not a good deal? When you don't need it (the product). Yea, I pretty much throw that saying in the garbage. But I also know that something else will come along later that I'll mess with. So I would still say the glass is half full here and maybe you've been done a favor anyway.

I like what you did with the Gio Bill. I know there are people who would say "Who cares about a stupid starter Gio", but I do like mine. It plays like a champ for me.

Thanks.

When I got it, everything was black except the neck and fretboard. I couldn't live with that. The pickups are GFS Vintage Nashville Recotrons, tuners are GFS locking staggered tuners, CTS pots, CRL 3-way switch, Schaller strap locks, and chrome bridge with GFS stainless steel saddles. The neck pickup is very bluesy and the bridge sounds like a Tele.

On the left is my $55 "Lyon by Washburn". GFS Vintage 59 Alnico 5 humbuckers, GFS locking tuners, CTS pots, Switchcraft switch, Schaller strap locks, and chrome bridge with GFS stainless steel saddles.

On the right is my free Yamaha bass (given to me by my next door neighbor). GFS P-Bass pickups and CTS pots.

Image

Finally, my MIM Standard Strat. Fender SCN pickups, Shaller staggered/locking tuners, CTS pots, CRL 5-way switch, and GFS stainless bridge saddles. Oh. All of my guitars use Switchcraft Mil-Spec phone jacks.
