As previously stated...the salesforce are on salary plus commission and not particulary interested in selling the 'right' guitar to a newbie who is in there with a parent for the first time...if you get my drift. There's no altruism in a competitive environment and it sure pisses them off when I get these parents aside and advise them as to what's in the best interests of a beginner.

 I've done that before also Doc....the parents seemed very happy that somebody told their son things about vintage amps that seemed to agree with what they had tried to tell their teenage son. :D

i have no problems dealing with guitar center.

i often go to their used site. many times the prices on used gear are less than you would see on e-bay. you also have 30 days to return the item if you don't like it.

the other day i saw a valveking 112 amp on the used page for 199.00. i haven't found a used one for less elsewhere.

now carigslist. has anybody got a good deal on used from there? it seems prices are a little higher tan you see elsewhere. at least with g.c., i can return somrthing i don't like

oh yeah. i work over CL like a girlscout selling cookies. i make deals like crazy on there.

i refuse to cross any store off my list. they might have something i need one day.
i wont cut off my own foot.

We're talking GC here, not some Vintage shop. I can order any stock guitar/equipment from any store or on-line dealer I want. Poor customer service equals not wanting my business. Luckily I have not graduated to vintage guitars and gear.

I deal with the public all day long and answer some pretty "amazing" questions and get some pretty outrageous requests. If I can put on a smile and provide quality customer service, then anybody can. If a person cannot give me the customer service I deserve, they just do not warrant taking my money. I do not expect yes sir no sir, just answer my questions don't ignore me when I need to talk or ask questions. Don't look at me and assume that I am not going to buy. Chances are, if I don't that day, I will be back in 2 to 4 weeks. It's called research.

Like I said, too many other guitar stores around me to worry about that one store. It just happens that the one store I will never set foot in happens to be a GC. If I just have to visit Guitar Center, I would prefer go to the other one 20 more miles away. Nicer people, better selection, and not "snobby" to my questions.

Like I said, not all GC's are all bad, just that particular one. And no...I will not go in that particular store unless they have killer deals going on, and I just do not feel like driving an extra 30 minute drive. I have not set foot in there in 4 years. They may not even have the same people there that orginally pissed me off, but the damage is done.

Wow, why are you defending this one GC that I cannot stand. It's my issues with this one store. Not GC's all are bad. I prefer to just not to go into that one store. If I want vintage or preowned stuff there are other stores I can go to. On principle alone I resfuse to go back to this one store of 40 others in my immediate area.

I think that its best if we agree to disagree with this point. I'm not condeming all Guitar Centers, just this particular one. I will go to others, just not this one. I really do not to fight, and I do value your words of wisdom you post here.

I am glad you have great experiences with your local Guitar Center, until I moved here and experienced this one store, I had as well. And I am sure not all people have experienced what I did at this store, and I hope no one ever has to. We also have another one in our area a little further down the road that I still frequent to this day. If that bad store has something I like, I just have them ship it to the other store, buy it there and the sale does not go to that store.

Have a great one. RK

If you think that's bad, think about the clown who sold his guitar for $20. I wouldn't have cared about the 10 bucks. If I saw potential in the guitar, I would have spent the $39. I've paid way more than that for a stupid pedal that I only used a couple of times. Something that cheap, why beat the sales guy out of a $2 commission?

Wow, all of these pages over a $39 used guitar.

You know what? That manager probably did you a favor anyway. I've purchased my share of cheap guitars (new and used) over the past few years. They're just what I like to use for our Summer outdoor gigs. If one gets damaged, I won't get all bent out of shape.

But any cheap guitar I buy HAS to have a descent neck. Like new frets, no buzzes. Believe it or not, some of even the starter pack guitars have good functioning necks. Everything else is tweakable.

After going through Squier, Hamer, Epihpone, Glen Burton, J. Reynolds, etc. I can honestly say that the best cheap guitar I've purchased so far is the Ibanez Gio. Maybe you should look out for one with a good neck. They're doing some pretty consistent fret-work on them. Nice for modding. I use mine a lot. I see these for $50-75 all of the time used, but in new shape. I actually play it more than my CV Squier. It feels smoother.

If a cheap guitar has a bad neck, it's not worth even the price drop you were asking for in my opinion. Maybe you should look at this as someone inadvertently doing you a favor in the long run.

In that department, having been there, done that, and made 3 big mistakes years ago in which I eventually came to learn that they seriously low-ball the trade to you and resell at 100% markup or better. That's before the days of the Forum when I didn't know better.

well i never trade nor sell gear as a rule.
for those that do and if i ever did, as long as the deal or trade in value was worth it to me, i dont care what the sell it for.
i mean its not like they are ripping you off. they make the offer and its still up to you to say yes or no. if its a low baller and you say yes, either you just ripped yourself off or, the offer was worth it to you.

Already got one:

Cost? Free. Won it in the "12 Days of Ibanez" contest this past Christmas. I modded it heavily. :D

Having had part ownership of a retail business (hobby shop), the cost of processing an item (taking it in, inventorying, reselling, doing books) is something consignment and used-stuff customers do not often understand. The lower the price, the skinnier the margin.

Please try to walk in the other bloke's shoes, especially when the numbers are so tiny.
