Never really understood the technical reasons for doing certain things on stage like amps, facing the band, and being on a tilt upward. I always took it for granted that the kids setting us up knew what they were doing and let it go at that. I know it sounds better, but don't know why. Will one of you tech. minded folks enlighten me? :?

amp on a stand tilted up projects the sound up and over so to speak.
ALL of my amps are on stands, unless they are the little bitty jobs.
ok, all my serious amps then. :D

I wonder if the 'amps facing the band tilted upwards' you are asking about are the monitors......?
That's just so you can get a decent 'mix' and hear what you want to be hearing while you play.
Amps on a stand also helps you hear better what you are playing on a loud stage.....

Sound from the speaker doesn't just go in a straight line from the speaker to your ears.

Lower frequecy sounds will bounce off of things and add together with the direct sound. So, a cabinet on the floor or especially in a corner of a room will sound like it has more bass.

Speakers sound different off axis as well because sound travels differently through space depending upon the freqency. So, your amp will sound different if your ear in directly in front of the speaker, on axis, or off to the side, off axis. The greater off axis the more pronouced the effect will be.

You want to hear what the audience hears, as much as possible. If your amp is miked, the mike will be close, so no floor bounce, and on axis. So tilting the speaker removes a lot of floor bounce and pointing directly at your ear reduces off axis effects.

But if you've got a couple of stacked marshall behind you, just go for it and have a good time.

I'll tell you some of the effects of room acoustics from a first hand view. I play in a church worship band and we were doing a Christmas thing. I was on one side of the stage with the drummer and bass player. We had always used in-ear monitors with an aviom fed directly from the sound board. Our piano player had always resisted using the monitor and was on the other side of the stage....nearly 100 feet away. The room is huge and known for odd reflections off the angled rear walls. During rehersal, the piano was a solid 1/8 second behind the rest of us. Enough to be heard. She was hearing us from the bounced off the rear walls and the distance from the speakers to the walls and back were enough to throw her completely off. She now wears the monitors.

our band plays so freakin loud you could point the speakers face down. it's very aggrivating. i have my 212 on a stand and i prefer to stand as far away as i can get but still be in front of it. (what???) you know what i mean. ( i hope).
every room is differnt. turning everything up to 11 does not equal a good sound. our best gig was played at a very low volume that only me and the drummer enjoyed. i would love for the other guitar player to use in-ear monitors. he plays WAY too loud all the time.

SRV was extremely loud,I've read that at one place the sound man had him place his amp on the floor on it's back with the speaker aimed at the ceiling.
A friend of mine saw him in the early days in Texas and although he was playing great,it was so loud my friend left.
There's no sense in shattering eardrums...it's a weakness that most bands have.
