I'm not usually a tone chaser trying to copy someone else, but I think I have found one exception.
The tone in question is that of Mr. Steve Albini with Big Black

It's really industrial, clanky, and metallic sounding and I can't for the life of me figure out how to a guitar sound like THAT. Anyone know how?

heavy mix with some serious effects. samples and over dubs of several insturments. heavy on a bass synth. i think i even heard a bag pipe sample droped into some effects.the guitar sounds like maybe a hall or plate echo and a metallic flange sound with a trebbly distortion. almost a tin can sound. so....thats what we call music today. really?man, i'm old.

Nope, it's all the guitar man.... real bass, drum machine.

It's called noise rock, and Albini is the Hendrix of the genre. And as far as I know he never used anything more than a distortion, which is why I'm scratching my head over that tone.

even live they use procssers. guitar synth stuff. maybe not a roland type.no guitar, not one sounds like that naturally. it's ok to use effects. it's like being in a firefight, you need something to hide behind. someone else can trigger effects and sounds."ignore that man behind the curtain.....i am the all powerful oz".

I'm not saying effects are bad, however I am saying that's not what they're doing. Look up some interviews with the man, it's all guitar.

there are a lot of keyboards in that song. just about anything is possible once those are in the mix. hes also go a serious play on tuning too the guitarist does.

if thats the kind of stuff you like, go for it i guess, but for me, i wouldnt waste my time
listening to it a a third time. in my opinion, it lacks any form of musical compisition and tallent. thats just me speaking though. its right up there with ghetto rap.
