Quote:
According to Nielsen, digital album and track purchases jumped 16.8 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively. Nielsen says digital retailers received more than half of all music transactions, propelling a 12.4 percent growth in sales over last year.

...

Despite the RIAA proclaiming the sky is falling due to piracy, vinyl album sales increased 37 percent in the beginning of 2011 compared to the same period one year prior, and have never been higher.

Great news for musicians, since the RIAA and majors are #$@*&!% dying, but music thrives.

Vinyl sales have never been higher? Ever? That's really something, wow.

I buy a lot of vinyl, but it's all used old stuff I find at fleamarkets and places like that.

I've bought a ton of vinyl, most recently the new Atmosphere, Flogging Molly(picture disc!) and Rise Against LPs. I love most punk labels, they're vinyl releases almost always come with free digital download cards.

Having grown up with vinyl and tape, to these (admittedly, not the best, most discerning) ears, digital (compressed, ultra-hyper-overproduced) music is absolute auditory excrement.

An old Cream vinyl through a fine preamp-amp and speakers which can really move air, versus a current artist's digital download...

...musically the difference between a Town Car and clapped out old Escort. 'Dunno how folks who claim to dig music, can listen to digital tripe without power vomiting.

Good to hear vinyl sales are back!

You haven't heard the right format then, likely a low quality rm or 128k mp3, a good FLAC has almost no peer.

Crappy sounding music is not limited to Digital Downloads.
Compression is being done on many new "Re-Mastered" CD releases which make me glad I still have the original vinyls.

Here's a good example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gmex_4hreQ

When they say up by 37%, they might mean the amount of money made, not the actual sales.

Vinyl does sound better--it truly "breathes," whereas poorly compressed/processed digital just gasps.

I kept all the old vinyl I could from my younger days, but a lot of my old original Rolling Stones records on the London label were lost in the Great Mortgage Payment Massacres of '94 and '96.

Oh, well...

My cousin runs a store that sells music CDs and he said they're selling more vinyl all the time...it surprised me also.
