About six years ago I had to break it to a guy in my band that his services would no longer be needed if he didn't refrain from imbibing during or before gigs. The last three gigs he played with us, during the last set (of each gig), we turned his amp down considerably and took him out of the mains (so the audience wouldn't hear him). He didn't even realize that I was playing all the guitar parts...cuz he was "rockin'!"

The last gig he played with us, he couldn't stand up very well so he dragged a chair beside the right main speaker, sat down and put his head against the speaker and played some songs that have not been heard before or since...and hopefully won't be heard again. I don't know how his hearing fared, because we were playing a huge barn (literally a barn) for a corporate party and we were loud with a capital L-O...and possibly U.

I confronted him two days later. The other members wanted to fire him outright, but I wanted to give him another chance, if he would just be honest and agree to stay sober before and during gigs.

He insisted that he "was not drunk and played fine...anybody who says otherwise is a liar...and I'm tired of playing your crap anyway...and you can't tell me not to play with you, cuz I quit!"

Oh, well. I hired his replacement in one ten minute phone call.

The unfortunate truth is that a lot of people don't or can't have a good time or perform in front of people without some sort of instant courage. I know I've been there done that (and got a gajillion t-shirts) A former girlfriend of mine was second chair in the local symphony, she had to pop a valium before every performance because her stage fright was so bad,and this was after having the gig for fifteen years. I've also jammed with a local reggae band that couldn't get it together without having their herb, but if they had it...they were killer. That being said I hate playing with drunks, which if you have ever run a jam in a pub or bar you know that you cannot escape. I guess my point is that playing music is supposed to be enjoyable and if a beer or a toke is needed so be it as long as it doesn't ruin the enjoyment for those you are playing with or for. (clean and sober for 12 years now)

He's lucky that didn't crush someone's head. I've had a few moments when drunks fell to close to my guitar or to mic stands near it. So far no harm done, except for my heart skipping a few beats.

I saw a drunk falling toward the stage once, and the bass player gently held him up with his foot to keep the drunk from falling onto the monitors, etc. Bassist never missed a lick, drunk was escorted to the back door.

Since August 8, 1998, Miller Brewing Company has changed ownership twice. I think a decision I made on that day had something to do with it...their sales in Fort Worth went down dramatically that day.

Wow, that's almost 13 years...time flies.

The guys I've played with over the years would have kicked him in the face so hard he would have rebounded off the back wall.

I used to drink like I had hollow legs and sponge feet but just stopped all of a sudden about 10 years ago and never touched a drop until we went on a cruise last year.I drank the whole while on the cruise but stopped when we got back home.Except for the occasional Margarita I still rarely drink at all.I was only drunk or wasted twice while gigging as previously mentioned but I always had a few drinks before and during playing to loosen up.
