Back in the 70s I used to work nights and we'd get a 1 1/2 hour break at around 2 A:M.There was a hot little brunette doll who worked my shift and we'd go on break together and sneak off to a deserted part of the building. It was a great time to be young even though we could've both gotten the heave ho,in those days hormones over ruled common sense.

I drove a truck to California and back for 1 1/2 years. Teams. Drive 5 hrs off 5 hours. So you would be working all shifts all the time plus you only get out of the rig to eat , fuel up, use the restroom (but not always). Talk about something that will mess you up!! I hardly knew what day it was. It threw my body out of whack for sure. I'd be off for 3 days out of 7. I'd be at home and I'd still sleep 5 up 5 . It got to be unbarebly boring. I had to quit it. My health was not so good.

I love the night shift. When I got out of the Army I worked over night installing card swipe systems in city buses, best job ever, too bad we were on contract. Nothing is better than working nights when you have a commute to get to work, less idiots to deal with on the road.

I work nights and love it. It's 1258pm here and I'm about to go to bed.

When we aren't on a mission of some sort, I work nights doing maintenance on our guns/electronics and radars, 2245 to 1045, it's great because I am getting back to my chu right when it starts getting ball-scorchingly hot.

That's a good schedule when the daytime sun brings the temps up to 130+. Nothing worse that that kind of heat and having to work in 'full battle rattle'.

Yeah, I feel sorry for the MRAP crews and $@!&, walking around in full IOTVs and ACHs, $@!& that noise.

Luckily our CIRAS aren't as bulky as the standard issue stuff.

I used to work 2 third shifts, then 2 second shifts, then 1 first shift every for a couple years. On your weekend you got off at 7am then had to sleep the next day. You tried to enjoy your next day off and go to bed early to be at work at 7am on your Monday. Nothing could have been worse, took me a long time to recover from that. We had many people that worked third shift only and wouldn't have it any other way. I believe that if you work nights, your employer better pay you dearly to do so.

Unfortunately, there are always things to do during the week (shopping, haircuts, doctor/dentist appointments, etc.) that have to be done during the day and will inevitably mess with your sleep.

I've been working nights (11-7) for the past 20 years. My philosophy is that my sleep comes before everything else. The ONLY exception would be if I had to take someone to the ER. All of my appointments are scheduled for early morning, even if I have to wait an extra week or so for one. I didn't get weekends off until about 6 years ago, so I missed out on a lot of weddings, picnics, parties, etc. that were held during the day on weekends or holidays (we never close, so there is no such thing as a holiday). My job sucks, but it's a lot easier working there at night than 1st or 2nd shift!

The BIG downside is, as others have said, that the rest of the world discriminates against us night-shifters. I like staying up late on the weekends, but I can't go to the bank at 3 am, or cut my grass. Even the laws are against us: there are noise limits after certain hours at night, but no limits during the day while I'm sleeping.

I worked midnight to noon (12 hour shifts!) for several years in the early 90s.

We worked three days on/four days off and then it would switch to four days on/three days off every other week. People would say, "But you have all those days off!"

Well, no, because the last day off you're sleeping to go back to work and your first day off you're sleeping because you're exhausted.

I finally quit trying to "go back to days" on my days off and became a vampire/night owl.

Sleeping wasn't too bad, except lawnmowers, chainsaws, children, dogs, loud cars/motorcycles, loud music...basically life in the real world...would disturb me.

Unless the family is starving, I'll never go back to nights...

Over the years done quite a lot of rotating shift work, 6/2 2/10 and nights 10/6.

Eventually got a day job just over a year ago. Better for the sleep patterns . Screws my body clock up chopping and changing all the time.

Lots of peeps get on with it i never really did.

I work overnights 12 hour shift. Engineering in a pharmaceutical packaging plant. I've always been a night person, and sleep better in the day. Kids are at school, and house is quiet. Nice part about it is although it's 12 hour shift I work 3 on 3 off, 4 on 4 off, so I get some nice time off. If I take a vacation I only have to use 2 or 3 vac. days to get some solid time off.

My partner is a police officer and her section shifts are pretty hairy to say the least. I had to adapt and it's not easy believe me. Sometimes when I'm leaving for work she is walking in the door at the end of her day. Like passing ships in a harbour. 8 days a row.

I'm used to it now, but it took a while... I like to think of the good she does in the community and on the road. It's worth it.
