I worked third shift for years. It's like you say, if you do it all the time it's not so bad. I used to leave work in the morning and head to the beach. Then sleep mid afternoon into the evening. When everyone else was going to bed, I'd be getting up, eating breakfast and going to work on a deserted freeway. I felt like part of the underground.

On the other hand, if you don't work nights regular, it can be real disruptive trying to go back and forth. I now have a construction company and we occasionally do retail remodels that need to be done at night. Trying to get a bunch of guys transitioned to nights and then back to days a few days later is like herding cats. Not pleasant. About the only thing they don't forget is if it's payday.

OMG... I worked the night shift once, and it was the worst two years of my life!

Your circadian rhythm (your body's natural "time clock") gets all whacked out, and your sleeping habits, health, fitness, and appetite also get all whacked out. Heck, I ballooned up to 230 pounds, because of the night shift. Thank God I don't work it anymore and got myself back down to 195-197 pounds, which is where I should be.

To be very personal and very blunt... Working the graveyard shift almost cost me my marriage!!! My wife worked days and I worked nights. We hardly ever saw each other, we (obviously) never slept together in the same bed, and it really put a strain on our marriage.

IF YOU HAVE A WIFE AND KIDS... DO NOT EVER GET ASSIGNED TO THE NIGHT SHIFT!!!!

I worked nights in a warehouse years ago, it was fine at first, but then I realized I was living on the fringes of the rest of society, Just going to a convenience store at lunch break turned you into an instant suspect to the cops prowling the streets to arrest someone. Weird lifestyle living after midnight. But on the other hand, I drove a tow truck when I lived in Tucson AZ. about 6 years ago, one of the best jobs I ever had, on call 24 hrs a day. I also drove a taxi in Destin Florida (right near Pensacola) and That job was another tie for best job. Drove Nights, During Spring Break, it was like the town turned into a circus. That was a trip. Made a lot of cash on that one, and a LOT of wild times. at this stage of my life, at 46 years old, I prefer Days in the office. a nice safe paycheck, and no hassles. I can't say all night jobs are bad or good, but they fit into ones life out of necessity, and you make what you can out of it. 8)

I used to work 2 weeks of days and the 2 weeks of nights-all 12 hour shifts-you'd just get use to the sleeping routine of 0ne when it was time to switch to the other.I changed jobs after that to all 8-4 Monday to Friday.

give them a day off before or after the job so they can get themselves in the swing of things. will ease the headache of the transition for everybody.

Nevin, the goings on there must make the time go by a little quicker than usual. Pretty original job, you could be doing a lot worse. Sounds cool to me. 8)

The O.R. at 3 A:M would be a joke compared to the morgue from some stories that one of my coworkers used to tell me-dead people can make some unnerving noises and movements.

It does make you feel like an outcast. I start work tonight at 10:30 PM. 1 more hour before I start work as I type this.

Ever worked by yourself in a hospital operating room at 3 AM? It is fun. If you let your mind run wild you will freak yourself out. Guaranteed.

I once saw a door close by itself in one of the operating rooms. I tried to duplicate it... I could not and it mildly freaked me out.

A lot of people refuse to do the job because they get so freaked out. I guess you have to be there to get the vibe. I generally do not believe in ghosts... but I have seen some crazy stuff working nights in the hospital.

i remember the thread you made about that. i had a similar ghost experience in the engineering department of the hospital at around midnight. creeped me out.

it'll kinda b like being nocturnal i guess. during the winter holidays every year i always go nocturnal. i get up around 6 PM and go to bed around 9 AM.

EDIT; and for those who are wondering what the hell was doing in an engineering department at a hospital around midnight alone, my dad works there and there was some sort of problem with the electricity.

Anybody here ever work nights?

Sometimes, a long (long) time ago. Never on a regular schedule.

I'm a night owl...went to bed @ 10pm..back up @ 12pm.,sucks on a week night to get only three or four hours of sleep....and have to get up and going @ 6am.
Now that I'm older, working all day makes it hard to stay up late, but in a couple of years if I live to retire I'm sure I'll flip my life over and sleep most of the day and live @ night.
Nighttime is cool, less of the rat race here in small town Tenn.,and the people of the night are somewhat weird...y'all know what I mean from reading the previous posts in this thread.

I spent 18 years on a 6 week rotating swing shift.......12 hr shifts, 6 weeks days 6 weeks nights, the days I work one week are the days i'm off the next.
Almost 5 yrs. ago I changed departments and went to nights only, 6:p-2:30a +/- depending on workload, monday-friday, off weekends.
I'm a "straw boss" foreman over....myself, because I work alone, unless our department gets a new hire that always trains with me on nights for a week or two, then promptly goes to days.
Where I work, they couldn't pay me enough to go back on days.

I've been working the overnight shift for the last two-and-a-half years. It's not so bad if you do it consistently (every night) and can get a decent amount of sleep during the day. Unfortunately, there are always things to do durning the week (shopping, haircuts, doctor/dentist appointments, etc.) that have to be done during the day and will inevitably mess with your sleep. My wife works an afternoon shift, and I've got to be up by 2pm most days to watch our two-year-old daughter. If I don't get a decent amount of sleep during the morning and early afternoon, I'm screwed!

I worked Night's for many years and loved it. One of the best things was when I got off, about 11pm and went to the bar. All the boys and girls were drunk, that gives you an advantage over them. At least you can still think and navigate. another good thing is you get to sleep in every morning. Just like gigging, get up at noon go to work, party, come home, sleep then get up and start all over again. The real killer is 3rd shift. Start about 11pm get off at 7am fall asleep driving home allmost every morning, when you get home you cant sleep, the rest of the world is awake. Nois, Lawn Moors, kids voices your wife wanting atention. You never get a chance to adjust to anything. Day shiht is the best you can get, at least life can be normal. And maby someday you can retire, then after a while you get sick Hart, Cancer, Lungs. You never know. And then one day your gone. :) Some say there may be something after that, I dont know. :)
