So take an extended R&R and see how you feel in a couple of months, Tim. I suspect you'll grow to regret it immensely if you simply "furl the colors and stand down" permanently.

+1 Tim, you'll be surprised how much changes with a layoff. I do that every once in a while if my playing gets stale. I've reinvented myself many times over.

Tim just think of the people like Leona Boyd ,Les Paul,Jason Becker, me and some other forum members who are suffering from neuro-muscular conditions who would sell an internal organ to be able to play like they used to or even to be able to play a whole song pain free. You have a God-given gift don't just throw it away and turn your back on it forever.

Tim, you're just bored with playing what you play. It happens to lots of people. FirstMeasure may be taking a hardline, but I think he's making a good point.

Hmm, you've gotten all the enjoyment you can out of it, huh? I've been playing for 20 years and cannot relate to that statement.

What, may I ask, did you USED to enjoy about it? Chicks? The cool Image? The "Life of the Party" status?

I hope you're not looking for sympathy. Telling a guy like me you're giving it up because you don't enjoy it anymore is like saying "I'm hanging up my Heart because I'm tired of making it beat".

If you can hang it up, please do. Perhaps you never should have wasted your time actually learning the guitar if you're just going to treat it like a video game or some other "Waste of Time".

I could go on for a few pages as to why you shouldn't Give it Up (or, more accurately, why I could never give it up), but I'll just leave it with this.......The gift of music isn't given to us so we can just enjoy ourselves. If you're not deriving any joy from your music, perhaps you're not sharing it with an audience (or maybe you do, but for the wrong reasons). Playing live and making other feel good through music is where the real rewards lay.

In the meantime, I hope you find something that brings you as much joy as music has brought to me.

Sorry if I'm too harsh or unsympathetic, this is just how seriously I take my art and it's audience.

To be honest that viewpoint just smacks of pretentious, stuck up, elitist attitude. There are many other reasons for music that just your own. JMO.

Anyway to repeat what others have said sometimes just giving yourself a break is enough to rekindle the spark. But hey still consider sending waycool some of the gear

Everything runs in cycles - everything. I've been playing for over 45 years now and I'm still psyched every time I get up in front of a crowd. I knew a long time ago that I was never going to fill an arena or have naked girls lined up at the door, so I took a more realistic route and just played.

I've been in a lot of bands, I've done solo and duo things through the years, even the last ten. I've been playing with a great electric lead player for 2-1/2 years now and he's about where you are - keeps telling me I'd better buy his gear while I can. I know he's tired of the bars and he won't even think about trying to line up work, just comes and plays the gigs I find. I think he and I are just about to the end.

Yesterday I sat down (for five straight hours) with another guitar player (mostly acoustic rhythm) who is moving back to this town and answered an ad I had posted on CL. This guy is 11 years younger than me and doesn't even know a whole bunch of the songs I am currently performing. The songs he does know and has been doing are 80s and 90s stuff that I don't know. And yet, I have a strong suspicion that he and I are about to join forces.

And I'm pumped! I'm ready for some new stuff! I'm ready to go back to playing lead, which has languished with my current partner since I've been doing the singing and playing rhythm. I have to play - can't get it out of my blood and I like the extra cash that rolls in and helps me support my collecting habit.

So whatever you do - hang it up for a while or whatever - DON'T SELL YOUR GEAR!

+1000000, couldn't have said it better myself.
i'd give both my legs to have full movemnt without the spasm's in my right arm/hand. my only wish is to get that back.
if you turn your back on guitar playing cause its getting boring then thats just shallow if you ask me.

lol how is that shallow? if thats his reason then thats his reason.
no reason to kick a guy for having his own reason for wanting to hang it up.

it will be interesting to hear what TGS says when she gets in here.
a youngster in the eyes of many, but she has some words of wisdom
for her age sometimes.

The way I see it if you enjoy something do it, if not then stop, the reasons for enjoyment are your own as a person and are no more or less valid than anyone elses.

Life is far too short to be pandering to some illusions of grandeur that can be placed on certain things if you don't want to.

wow i still got to comment on the shallow comment.
tim and i have talked via PM unto the wee hours of the morning
on a couple occations. i can tell you this, tim is a pretty smart and
very humble guy when it comes to his playing and far from shallow.

ive talked with tim on this and he has the most nobel of reasons for
wanting to hang it up for a while. if there was ever a good reason for it
he has a couple. unselfish reasons to boot. personally, i dont think they
are good reasons, but i can see where he feels they are.
all the more reason not to, but its up to him.

as far as me harrassing him about the jetcity, he knows well that im pulling his leg about
it. he wont sell, not now anyways.
