What is life?

Life is a gift, accept it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is a mystery, unfold it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a struggle, face it.
Life is beauty, praise it.
Life is a puzzle, solve it.
Life is opportunity, take it.
Life is sorrowful, experience it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a goal, achieve it.
Life is a mission, fulfill it.

I can relate. I recently picked up my guitars up after nearly a decade of standing silently in a closet (them, not me). I had played for around 40 years and by the end it had become nothing more than a job for me. Despite all that I never got rid of any of my equipment (although I'm looking high and low around my house for some of it nowadays).

As I said I've returned to playing and have gained back some of the joy of music that started for me with piano and then trumpet before getting my first guitar at 14. I have no delusions of grandeur nor any real desire to travel any further than my living room for a gig. I've also set a personal goal of learning to become a competent sight reader and spend lots of practice time to that end (something I always wanted to do). But it's all on my own time and I'm just in it to have fun now. Come to think of it, it's kind of like when I started with it all those years ago. Good luck (and I strongly recommend you don't sell anything!).

DONT GIVE IN TO THAT OLD I QUIT BUG, HE'S A BAD ONE. REMEMBER BACK TO MY OLD POSTS, I USUALLY SAY KEEP IT FUN. YOU HAVE MADE A LOT OF FRIENDS ON THE FORUM AND WEE ENJOYE YOUR MUSIC, KEEP IT COMEING. I QUIT ONCE AND IT LASTED FOR 40 YEARS, IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK TO GET IT GOING AGAIN. AT MY AGE IT NEVER WILL COME BACK ALL THE WAY. THERE IS MORE TO LIFE THAN MUSIC ALONE. DURT BIKES, GIRLS, CARS, TRY FLYING, SMALL PLANES ARE COOL AND WILL TAKE UP A LOT OF YOUR STUDY TIME FOR A WHIAL. WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED YOUR FLYING LESSONS YOU'L HAVE A LIFETIME HOBY TO FALL BACK ON. GOOD LUCK AND DONT JUMP SHIP. KEEP LIFE FUNN. :)

Hi Tim,don't pack it in all together-you'll regret it-I went through a slump for a few years where I didn't play much at all except for a few weeks if I bought a guitar or amp that I"Had to Have" as that urge never left strangely enough.Whatever you do don't part with any gear because if and when the urge comes back you'll be kicking yourself.Don't make any rash decisions, take a breather or short sabbatical from it and pursue other interests bbut believe me it's hard to give up something that was such a huge part of your life. There are even days now-though they are few-that I don't touch the guitar but there's always something that triggers that lttle thing me that makes me want to pick up my guitar and play.
It would be a sin to have all the knowledge that you've acquired go to waste.Take in some students and pass on your expertise even if it's just 3 chord campfire stuff that way you won't have to play so much but at least you'll be passing on your craft.

Well, after coming back to the guitar after many years I can tell you the worst thing to do is give it up! When I think of how much I've lost in the abilities I once had...staggering!

I regret it quite a bit.

Tim,

I have gone through the exact thing that you are describing. I took a little break that lasted about a year. I did play occasionally but nothing to speak of. I didn't get rid of any of my equipment, I just neglected it severely. I don't guess that it was a bad thing, it cleared my head for when I came back. DON'T give it up for good, just lay it down until you feel the desire to pick it up again. That creative spirit will creep up on you again.

I have listened to your music and you are good at what you do. Your need to play will prevail in the end and you will be all the better for it. Take my word for it, you WILL want to play again.

Good luck!

Stuart

Hmm, you've gotten all the enjoyment you can out of it, huh? I've been playing for 20 years and cannot relate to that statement.

What, may I ask, did you USED to enjoy about it? Chicks? The cool Image? The "Life of the Party" status?

I hope you're not looking for sympathy. Telling a guy like me you're giving it up because you don't enjoy it anymore is like saying "I'm hanging up my Heart because I'm tired of making it beat".

If you can hang it up, please do. Perhaps you never should have wasted your time actually learning the guitar if you're just going to treat it like a video game or some other "Waste of Time".

I could go on for a few pages as to why you shouldn't Give it Up (or, more accurately, why I could never give it up), but I'll just leave it with this.......The gift of music isn't given to us so we can just enjoy ourselves. If you're not deriving any joy from your music, perhaps you're not sharing it with an audience (or maybe you do, but for the wrong reasons). Playing live and making other feel good through music is where the real rewards lay.

In the meantime, I hope you find something that brings you as much joy as music has brought to me.

Sorry if I'm too harsh or unsympathetic, this is just how seriously I take my art and it's audience.
