I have D'Addario .01- .052 on my strat. You definitely feel a difference, bending is just a little more difficult, but is worth it to me for the sound I want. The trade off is a thicker sound (especially with gain/distortion). I have Erine Ball 9-42 on my tele which I think fit the guitar perfectly. So, it just depends what sound your looking for.

You'll feel a difference. I've never played .9's because I just don't like the way they feel. If you're after big bends (2 steps +) then I can see why people would want to play them, but I'm just more comfortable with .10's. Yes, they're a bit harder to bend, but I can dig in and attack the strings better than I can on anything lighter. I really like .11's and .12's too, but more so in drop tunings and shorter scale guitars (like on a Les Paul or a Strat in Eb). I compromise and play 10-52s. That way I can get the bends I want, the tone I want, and the attack I want. But that's just me, the best thing for you to do is try different gauges out and see what you think works best for you. (Just be mindful of the setup, changing gauges too radically can cause do some crappy things to your guitar. You won't hurt it, but the playability could be put out of wack or the larger strings sitting in a nut which was cut for another gauge could cause it to break over time.)

i use both, the 10s will be harder to bend but the 09s are pretty similar to the fenders...

Why not try 9.5's and work up to 10's?

Yes, 9.5's do exist! And they're a great in-between gauge. :D

D'Addario EXL110 XL Regular Light Electric Guitar Strings (my choice) are 0105 .0135 .018 .028 .038 048 and would be an easy adjustment, IMO, plus a much fuller sound.

I always found the sound coming from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings with .09's was never quite right, they sounded too thin to me. I recently put tens on my guitar and they really are a lot better. I get that slightly fuller sound without compromising too much "bendability"

I am going to try out different mixes though such as bottom heavy etc just to see what's out there.

I swear by D'Addario strings and only use 8-38s on all my electrics and the 10 -46 with the .018 wound 3rd on my acoustics.I always do the Buddy Guy/Jimi Hendrix 3 step bends and find that they're the best suited for that for their flexibility and their ability to stay in tune even after several 3 step bends.
