Point well taken, but it's like trying to know what color dinosaurs were. You can't be certain, you can only make an educated guess based on what is left behind. You'll probably be close to the truth, but only the dinos know for sure, and they ain't talking.

That's OK. They were probably color-blind anyway. Color perception is a pretty limited sense. As far as I know, only primates and some tropical birds have it--and probably some insects as well.

Historians live in the records others leave behind, both written and non-written. We don't know what Bismarck thought about Wilhelm II, who fired him. But we do have his papers.
