PIck up some lessons in a style that is the complete polar opposite of what you normally play!

That tends to get me going again. And remember, 'nothing to practice' is never really true............. :?

ANother way is just go and listen to lots of music for a while and don't panic if you don't want to play for a wee while....the urge, in my experience, always comes back.

Hi Helix, learn to play Bass guitar if you don't yet. Or join a band for a while. Good luck.

Hi Izzy,I guess that we've all been in that rut from time to time. What I've always done was to put down the guitar for a few days and listen to a completely unfamiliar genre of music and even different instruments. This ahs worked for me in the past and I usually go back to it with a new approach and vitality.

Yes, Put away the guitar for about a Week, Don't pick it up no matter what. Go Outside and do some Fresh Air Things all week, maybe go to a Bar at night and see a local act or two for a few nights, and Drink a bunch of beers at least four nights of the seven. You will be ready to jam again next week. If not, Try again. 8)

Try an alternate tuning--an open tuning or something like that.

Agreed. Always go for guitars styles outside of your usual styles and genres. This will freshen up your mind and fingers. Grab a new tuition DVD as well. Fresh ideas on exercises are good. Nothing inspires also like seeing a great guitar player.

Like others have said, we all go through phases when we don't feel like playing even if it's for a few weeks or years... we all go through it. Don't worry your guitar will be there waiting for when you're ready.

The best way for me to get in the mood to play is go out and watch a band play. Head to the local pub and just enjoy some music. There's a blues joint just up the road from me that always have a great band playing.

If nothing else I'll throw in a DVD. Nothing better then watching SRV @ El Macombo to get the juices flowing.

'Contributing to a project to build a special house for a young soldier terribly, terribly, terribly wounded in the war. He's a quadruple amputee.

Play for him, because you can.

Make every note a prayer of thanks and encouragement....
