Here's a quick question for you all...

I was just fiddling around with that old Digitech RP7 Valve processor that I still have, and changed the Tremelo setting that I had stored to Phaser. I messed around with the rate and depth settings, while strumming a few clean open chords.

Long story short, I stumbled on a very nice, subtle, phaser tone that's sounds pretty sweet. It's a nice slow sweeping phaser tone for clean open chords and arpeggios.

Do you have a Phaser stompbox or mess around with that type of effect?

In the old days before flangers became available I had to rely on my old Bad Stone and Small Stone phasers to get a flange-like effect. When I ran my Big Muff Pi through the Badstone I could pretty well approximate the whooshing sound of Jimi's Axis Bold As Love.In the day people used to flip out when they heard that,of course the effect was much greater when you played chords.

I use the phase effect on a couple of Montrose tunes -- "Rock The Nation" and "Make It Last" (from their first album).

I use a old japanese cheapo chorus, called a KEN-MULTI (you can tell it's quality by the name  ) for phase, chorus and flange effects.

Good sounds happen in the most suprising of places.

You can't play Van Halen without a phaser. Or if you do....you really shouldn't.

EVH uses a flanger

Big difference.

My 1st generation A/DA is the same model as his.

My transition-era MXR Phase 90 (in the late 70's when they were going from the "script" logo to the "block" logo but they hadn't added the indicator LED yet) plays a huge part of my sound. I don't use it all the time, but there's several of my songs that just can't be played without it.

It's one of two pedals that would accompany me to the proverbial desert island...

PS--By the way, EVH used both flangers and phasers in the early days (and I assume, now)--thus his signature MXR Flanger and his signature MXR Phase 90...

I have an Electro Harmonix Small Stone, and I essentially use it for exactly the same reasons as you do. I've probably only found one song with my band which actually works with it, mostly I use tremolo for modulation.

I use a very light phase effect occasionally when i'm feeling Hendrix/Gilmour ish....sounds a lot better thru my Strat than my "G-brand" guitars.

Mines in a Zoom multi effects unit that gets dragged out maybe 2x a month.

Trivia question: What was the first song that featured phase-shifting?
I had read it was discovered accidentally during the recording of this song.

I would like to know the answer, Drew. The first place I heard it was on a Byrds LP. fifth Demention, I think.
