I've been thinking long and hard for a while about this, and had a discussion with my son also regarding selling most of my gear and using the money towards an older Porsche 911, most likely a 1987 or 1988, preferably a coupe. I've wanted a Porsche since I was 12...that's a long time. This desire has increased since I started doing HPDEs in my WRX. My playing has been reduced to a minimal amount...I don't need 7 guitars and 4 amps, and I would get more pleasure from the Porsche.

I've decided that I'm only going to keep two guitars and one amp, and everything else goes.
Staying is my Gibson CS-336, my Ron Kirn Barnbuster Tele, and my 1971 Marshall SuperLead 100 (this was bought as an investment also, and as one of the things I'm passing on to Michael).
As for my pedals, I'm only keeping my EMMA ReezaFratzitz, my Skin Pimp Mark III fuzz, and my Fulltone GT-500 Boost/Distortion.

What is going?
A 1999 Fender MIA Strat in Ocean Turquoise Metallic with maple neck
A 2004 CIJ double bound Tele with Bigsby and VVT pickups
A 2005 Custom Shop Time Machine 63 Tele NOS in CAR, which was never even played and still has the plastic on the pickguard.
A 2006 Gibson Diamond Series ES-335 with Bigsby in Pelham Blue.
A 2007 Gibson Les Paul Standard Faded in Iced Tea.

A 1971 Marshall JMP Tremolo 50w smallbox with original footswitch
A Carol-Ann OD2 100 in cream tolex.
A Paul Ruby Train Wreck Rocket clone built for John Speck. This is Diana.

Pedals going are: Line 6 MM4, an original 1985 MIJ Boss Dimension C, a Dr. Scientist Tremolessence V2, an MXR Carbon Copy, and a CAE dual Fasel MC404 Wah pedal.

I also have 4 cabs, 1997 Marshall 1960 TV 412, Bogner 412 UberKab, Mojo 212 (my favorite I think..Celestion Gold and a Scumbag G12H75), and a Mesa 112 with a Fane Medusa 150.

A lot of stuff accumulated over the last few years...too much, but then again, I know we've all gone through buying binges...GAS is a mighty powerful force of nature. I know that as sad as I may be to see this stuff go, the shit-eatin grin I'll have on my face when I find the right Porsche will more than make up for it! For those of you who have obsessed over something for a long time, you know where I'm coming from. A couple of examples, both 1988s

I will remain on the boards of course as this place has given me much advice, much laughter, and of course, friends.

Oh good God!!!!!!!!!!

CHoosing between guitars and Porsches................................

I do NOT envy you man!!!!!

I think if I was going for a Porsche it would have to be a 911.......but I prefer the 60s and early 70s models.................I am just not that partial to the Whale Tail..............

But still........it's a Porsche and as lng as it's a 911 you really will have the biggest 'shit-eating grin'(that made me laugh sooo much and is now my favourite slang!!!  ) and anyways, you ain't going to fit all that gear in it's trunk so yeah get rid and enjoy the German engineering!!!!! :D :D

I can empathize fully with your dilemna,if anyting was to sway me from any of my guitars it would be a vintage or classic car.Porsche 911 is right up there as far as delectable goes for sure. All I can say is to follow your heart or should I say accelerator foot?

I say gentlemen, start your engines. Go for it Serge, you already set up your mind on which gear to keep and which car to get. It is not as if you were going to burn all these guitars, some guys will buy them and enjoy them, and you'll do the same with the porsche. Good luck.

I know how you feel. I would love to get my hands on a Corvette Z06 or 392 Challenger. I have been thinking of doing the same sort of thing since the first of the year.

Never owned a Porsche, but at one time I owned three Corvettes, two I bought when I turned 40 in 1990 and one a year later - a 1971 roadster, a 1974 coupe and a 1981 coupe. I sold the 1971 when I was offered a lot more than I paid for it. The 1981 was wrecked when I was stopped in traffic construction on I-94 in Fargo, ND, and I was rear-ended by a Pontiac Sunbird doing 55 mph! I was actually able to drive the '81 home (unlike the chickie in the Sunbird), but repairs eventually put an end to the car. My son wrecked the '74 (my favorite) when he left the highway doing about 85 mph, hit a culvert and flipped the car a half dozen times 500' out into a cornfield in MN. That was the end of the Vettes. I took my insurance settlement and bought a new Silverado.

Oh, and I have a whole lot of guitars and amps - traded one obsession for another, kind of the opposite of what you are doing.

Enjoy the ride!

Reminds me of what I went through 12 years ago... I've always been into cars and racing, once I got this lovely machine and started doing track days and autox my guitars sat for many years untouched. Lucky for me I only had 3 guitars and a couple amps, nothing was sold.

After about 10 years of cars and racing, I'm back to playing my guitars and no racing events, it's a lot safer that way :)

I say go for it, enjoy it while you still can, it is one heck of an experience! Your driving skills will only get better and it will help you in everyday driving. I hope to make it out to Sebring again one of these days...

Not sure if you've driven any of the older 911s at the track, it's nothing like that WRX, lift in a corner and you will be kissing a wall very quick!

Interesting, I'm going the other way. I've been racing with the POC for about 8 years but I haven't done an event since November. My head is more into music right now. I was pretty heavy into the racing bug for a long time. I don't know if you plan on taking your 911 to the track. If so we have a saying, "What part of "Porsche racing" sounded cheap to you?" :)
My business partner just sold an '86 911 that was mint. He had a hard time selling it.
Here's a pic of my BSR, Boxster Spec Racer:
