Personally, I don't care, and I'm not going to apologize for my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Can't stand the guy or his mediocre parrot playing. I don't care about being politically correct and possibly hurting some fans feelings, he apparently doesn't care what comes out of his mouth . Truth is, you don't even have to play music to be a music critic. People actually make a living at it and never played a note of music.

Success is measured in different ways by different individuals. At one time I paid the bills and lived okay playing music locally. Lots of people do. We weren't doing covers either. It's hard work. We weren't good enough for the big time and I got over it pretty quickly and went in a different direction. You don't have to be a bozillionaire to be successful, just make ends meet and have some cash to fall back on. I had a blast while it lasted.

Frank Zappa claimed The Shaggs were better than the Beatles. What do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR9d4ESlpHY

i dont hate the guy ya know. hell i dont know him.
im happy that hes found success in a field where so few do. i too also hope he buckles
down and leaves the pop/teeny bopper image behind him and uses his situation for a better use in the future
. since hes already there he might as well try to get super serious and focus on his future and not the here and now.[/quote]

I couldn't agree with you more...

I don't know abot the next Clapton (never figured that one out, the next Dylan, Hendrix, Clapton ect.) I've seen him on Austin City Limits and heard a couple of Hendrix covers by him. He did a good job on the covers and seemed quite comfortable playing the tunes he chose. His singing is passable (probably better than mine). I don't know if I would call him a bluesman yet, I think he could mature into one someday but right now he seems more like a pop star kinda guy to me. Just my 2 cents worth.

Somebody said that it's hard to judge an artist by their character, and that's true to a certain extent. Many of my favorite artists (musicians, painters, writers, etc.) are immoral, arrogant, miserable bastards...Picasso...Ike Turner...Truman Capote...the list could go on forever.

However, I personally can't help but have my opinion of an artist somewhat colored by their actions away from the stage/canvas/typewriter. While it's hard to find a dealbreaker (where I will refuse to listen to a person's music due to personality alone), it does change how I feel about them...and you do, too.

You want proof? What's your first thought when I mention Michael Jackson? A good 75-80% (if not more) of us immediately thought, "Child molester." It was never "proven," but it was believable, and he made it worse for himself by paying off people instead of fighting it to the last dime. Yes, he was a great singer, songwriter, dancer, entertainer...but in the back of my mind I still think, "I wouldn't have allowed my kid around him, because I'm just not sure..."

Likewise, Mayer has good-to-great guitar chops, stage presence and marketable looks. He can be funny (he's cracked me up several times with his various interviews and on-camera pranks). He's been accepted by Clapton, Buddy Guy and others who don't have to put up with anybody they don't want to.

...but I still think of his awkward faces when he sings (my parents taught me not to stare at people with disabilties), his self-love proclivities, the famous girlfriends, the pot habit and racist comments...so, yes character matters and definitely changes how we feel about an artist, no matter how much we like his art.

I'm talented like that... :P

I meant that an artist's character is a factor in how we feel about them. I have reservations about both Mayer and Jackson (although Jacko isn't much of a threat nowadays).
