I think this thread will get the John Mayer fan's panties in a knot!
I like some of his stuff. I own 2 albums, but I got them as promos. I like the live trio album best, but he does a few other peoples tunes on it. He does I Got a Woman, and when he starts singing "She gives me money" people start to cheer. They probably thought Kanye West and Jaime Foxx were about to step on stage. It makes me laugh everytime I hear that part!

Not another Mayer thread. You described the situation to a T. I predict if he keeps smoking the weed as much as he does, you'll find his CD's in the dollar bin at Disk Go Round. I've never liked him never will. And no, I don't consider him a Blues anything. He just plays the notes and makes the faces. I think he's more famous for the cute celebs he's boned.

You know your going to release the fanboys and girls.

He's as banal as the current crop of pop tarts which permeate the airwaves today with their "music" (Beyonce, Brittney, etc).

Mayer's CDs are great albums to sleep by though.

(do not drive or operate machinery when listening to these discs)

I wouldn't exactly call myself a fanboy, but I quite like him. A blues guitarist, hmmm. I don't think I would call him that, but I do think some of his work has a little bit of early Clapton in it.

Some of the stuff he's done isn't great, but the stuff that's good is pretty awesome I think. I like watching him play, he just seems comfortable with a guitar. I really liked the Where the Light Is album, its one of my favourites, it has a good mix of stuff in there and he does them really well.

As for his douchebag status, I think sometimes he does get a little full of himself, but on the whole I think he's kinda funny, I think he deliberately says things sometimes just to stir things up, or just to see what happens. Hell, if I was famous I would. I reckon it could be quite fun.

His stuff has a lot of lots of people in it. Not one of his songs that I've heard are original.

If Clapton was in that flick "The Human Centipede" He'd be the one hooked onto Clapton. I really don't hear any early Clapton in his playing at all.

nope, no early clapton at all. maybe the mid 80s clapton when he went commercial
for a bit, but thats about it.
i personaly dont care for his stuff. well there has been a couple times when he got to play with clapton and BB that wasnt bad, but again he wasnt doing his personal stuff.

I don't mind some of his stuff....in small doses. I downloaded a couple of albums and a couple of concerts and just have to be in the mood. :| :|

As far as being Claptonesque........I don't think so but then I am biased when it comes to EC......

I saw a concert, can't remember wht. probably an older Crossroads and EC and Meyer were on stage for a couple of songs........everyone started going apesh%t when Meyer did a solo and then CLapton 'replied' with a solo half the length and with about a tenth of the notes and just blew him off the stage..............

I don't think Meyer is really a blues guitarist I would say he is more a songwriter wh is decent on guitar.

As far as his contemporaries on guitar go.....give me DOyle Bramhall III any day.

I admit I am a fan of John Mayer's music, and I have several albums and a couple of DVD's, however I can completely see why others may not like him.

As for the blues guitarist thing, I know he is a big fan of SRV, so maybe he tries to be a blues guitarist. The next Clapton thing I'm not sure he is really.

However I am by no means in a position to judge his or anybodys playing, just my 2 pence worth :)

I'm not a fan, have none of his music, will change channel if he comes on TV, would not go to one of his shows, etc.

He's no Ray Goren (10 yr old bluesboy) IMO :

He's ok, I wouldn't complain if he came on the radio, but I don't think I've ever deliberately listened to him.
I don't think its fair to compare him to Justin Bieber though, I mean obviously hes put in the work to learn the guitar, rather than Justin Bieber's less labour intensive road to fame.

hey some people get there by different roads than others. some have to work at it day and night for 1/2 their lives, while some never get discovered. some get discovered just by going out to check their mail. go figure.
thing is, its always been that way and it will always be that way too.
