which do you prefer most? amp distortion or pedal distortion?

Previous amp ---> Mid 80's Fender Super 60 1x12 all tube combo.
Amp distortion. I loved the sound of tubes being driven hard, but yet with a respectable volume level. 8)
For some stupid reason (rectalcranialinversion), I sold the amp... :(

Current amp ---> 2011 Fender Frontman 65R solid state combo.
Pedal distortion (old Digitech RP7 Valve processor). I have tried and tried to fiddle with the amp's drive channel settings, EQ settings, etc..etc.. and it still sounds so harsh and brittle, it will peel the paint off the wall! Sheesh, it sounds like a couple of stray cats having a fight out in my backyard! So, I use the old Digitech and it can "almost" sound like a nice overdriven tube amp, since it has a 12AX7 preamp tube built into it.
