Sovtek Big Muff and/or DS-2 >all

Although the distortion on my Hot Rod Deluxe is nice if I want something that sounds really dirty and raw but not overwhelming.

I make full use of both but mostly use amp distortion for blues and classic rock but for harder rock such as Hendrix I use mostly my vintage Big Muff Pi,Marshall Guv'nor or Danelectro French Toast Octave Fuzz.

Dimeing my Plexi can't be beat, but most places these days require a more reserved approach. Pedals have their place............ 8)

I prefer amp distortion but when that's not possible I use an old Danelectro Daddy-O...built like a tank and tweakable enough to get the tones I like.

Hi Riley,I'm curious about your Orange amp too as all the demos I've heard on them and reviews say that the overdrive is great. Is it a solid state or tube amp?If it's S/S that may explain it as they usually don't produce an overdrive anything like a tube amp.

Guitar...vol knob..tone knob... +++
Amp....depending on the venue size... adjust your amp's wattage to the environment.
A 10 to 15 watt valve amp tweaked to max will outperform any pedal. and will give you a myriad of on the fly adjusting from pick attack to just dialing in the tone an volume.
A bigger space may require a 25...40... or a 60 watt amp.

Currently on my pedal board I have four distortion type boxes. Mix those with amp gain and it's all bliss and sonic paint stripping.

Both, always both

its a orange crush 35lxd. its solid state, so that obviously explains it. got it purely for the clean tone.....i have to start saving for a bigger orange, maybe a stack

been thinking towards that too i'm thinking on getting a new amp perferrably with a footswitch it's just hard to find a decent tone for me i'm always searching to tweak my tone and maybe amp distortion could help

if you guys prefer pedal distortion could you recommend a pedal i'm pretty connected to the ds-1 distortion on my me-70 dunno if it's the same as a normal ds-1 but it has been working for me...

My search for a good basic drive unit that does everything from Red House to Holy Wars ended with this

It's simply the best I've heard, ever. And Mr Martin (who knows a thing or two) refuses point blank to mess about with true bypass. Tells you a thing or two about the importance of it.

Here's the rig

Amp set to about 4 on the volume so it's halfway between compressing and distorting. Pedals to push it over the edge to varying degrees with different accents. Variety is the spice of life.

One day a vortex opened in the space-time continuum and my Marshall Triple Super Lead fell through from another dimension. The crunch and lead channels on that were designed by higher pan-galactic beings and to put a pedal in front of them would be like adding 7Up to malt whisky. It shall not be done.

The only possible purpose for pedals is to try to emulate the sound of the TSL through a practice rig at volume levels acceptable to neighbors and police. For the last couple of years my Blackstar HT-Dual pedal has been providing both drive and distortion sounds that come the closest yet to The Real Thing. It's not a surprise to find that Blackstar was founded by escapees from... Marshall.

It all makes sense.

Cheers - C
