For years I've been looking for a song by Paul Revere and the Raiders that was on the flip side of one of their hit 45s back in the 60s.The song is called Observation from Flight 285 in 3/4 time.I finally tracked it down at CD Universe on a rerelease of an older compilation album.I love finding lost nuggets like that and often buy entire CDs or albums for the sake of one song.Anyone else as fanatical as me about old lost musical gems?

It took me a while to find Omaha by Moby Grape and "A Change On The Way" by Terry Knight and The Pack. But I never forget the nuggets no matter how long it takes. Beau Brummels, "Cry Just A Little" was another that took a long time to get. Of course most of this waiting was pre Itunes. Life has changed.

Took me quite a while to find "House Of The Rising Sun" by Frijid Pink. At least, to find a quality rip since it cannot be had on CD.

I haven't been able to get the album "The Road Goes Ever On" Live by Mountain. Love that version of Nantucket Sleigh Ride! This is all stuff I have on vinyl but haven't heard in years.

I'm still looking for a copy of American Blues Do Their Thing. It was the band's second album, and I've never even heard anything from it. I found it on vinyl once, but they wanted waaaaay too much for it, so I politely declined.

I found a copy of their first album (American Blues Is Here) on CD, on the Akarma label. That disc (and the Moving Sidewalks Flash CD) cost me around eighty bucks, but it made me that much closer to having everything in the ZZ Top discography. The CD covers were cardboard and were perfect replicas of the original LP artwork, just shrunk down to CD size.

I liked the Moving Sidewalks disc quite a bit; the American Blues disc had its' moments, but overall, it wasn't my favorite. A lot of people who have similar musical taste as mine say that the American Blues was the better of the two bands, but a comparison of those two discs says othewise. That's why I want the "Do Their Thing" album, for further evidence (and to complete my ZZ Top collection; I have everything the band itself has released as well as quite a few live bootlegs--shh! don't tell anybody!--and almost everything from the bands the guys were in before ZZ Top).

For those who don't know, American Blues was the band Dusty Hill and Frank Beard were in together pre-ZZ Top. Moving Sidewalks was one of Billy Gibbons' pre-ZZ bands.

There was a song that came out in '74 that was called either Carrie's Gone or Kerry's Gone and I haven't been able to find it anywhere.I've Googled it and lookedon different recorded music sites and can't find it.The song meant a lot to me as they were playing it on the radio when someone very close to me died a horrible death-but I won't get into that. The Song's chorus went:
Can't you hear me callin' Carrie(Kerry?),
Can't you see me cry.
Can't you hear me callin' Carrie?
You're too young to die my baby,
You're too young to die.
I know it's a pretty bleak song but at the time I really identified with it but unfortunately never bought it.I even called the local stations to see if they still had a record or listing of it.Do these lyrics ring a bell with anyone? If there was one song from the past that I really wanted to find that would be it.I thought it may be by J.D. Souther or J.C. Strunk but it's not in either of their discographies.

I've been looking for some Jerry Hahn Brotherhood on a CD or a downloadable format for over thirty years. Perhaps someday......

This song came out while I was in Vietnam and I had to have it, so I bought the album on reel-to-reel, along with a good Sony reel-to-reel to play it on. I sold the tape on Ebay for $88 in 2000, along with most of my 80 reel-to-reel tape collection.

Image

But I WAS a HUGE collector of CDs, especially when they first started coming out in the 80s and I wanted EVERYTHING that was on Billboard's Top 40 from 1955 to 1985 - after that I just didn't care. The Frijid Pink CD was released only as a UK Import in 1991 and then it was gone. I tracked it down in a Dallas head-shop and bought it for, I think, $28. A whole bunch of good tunes from these guys who were really blues artists.

I think the hardest song I ever tried to find on CD, though I finally found it, was the original version of 96 Tears by ? & The Mysterians. I really thought that group would never be released but I finally tracked it down in 1995 on the unknown CamPark label.

Though everything on the CD is original stuff, there's not a whole lot on there that can hold a candle to 96 Tears.

Are you sure that wasn't a regional release? It doesn't ring a bell at all and in '74 I was spending a lot of time listening to the radio in the L.A. area.

Yeah, it took me a long time to find Moby Grape, too. Omaha was great, but I also really liked Murder In My Heart For The Judge and Motorcycle Irene. Naked If I Want To was also interesting.

I bought The Best Of The Beau Brummels - 1964 to 1968 - on Rhino in 1987. I am currently performing both of their biggest hits: Just A Little and Laugh Laugh. Good stuff!

I'm with Drew - this draws a complete blank and I'm pretty encyclopedic when it comes to music, especially the 60s and 70s. Billboard's Top 40 lists only three "Carrie" songs: Carrie-Anne by The Hollies in 1967, Carrie by Cliff Richards in 1980 and Carrie by Europe in 1987. It doesn't mean it never charted, but it never broke 40 if it ever received national airplay. No "Kerry" songs whatsoever.

Hi Drew 365,it definitely wasn't a regional hit-at least not by a local artist-but if my memory serves me correctly the artist's first name s were 2 initials most likely J.C. or J.D. BTW the 2 songs mentioned by the Beau Brummels are among my favourites too and I tracked them down on Rhino Records too.You can't beat Rhino for obscure or obsolete recordings.

Here's another blast from the past, back when I had just got out of the Army and was living on a hog farm north of Ames (Iowa State University), Iowa. This band came to the Ames campus several times in a couple of years and put on a great live show. I particularly remember their very short bass player strutting around with a big Fender Jazz bass. They were from "down south" somewhere and no, they never broke Billboard's Top 40, though Two Hangmen got quite a bit of Midwest radio time.

Image

We used to sit in the upstairs of the farmhouse with all the windows open (if the breeze was right) and the big Sansui sound system cranked, listening to Mason Proffit performing Two Hangmen, Buffalo, Michael Dodge and Old Joe Clarke (great banjo). Those were much simpler days.

It took me a very long time to land this 22-track German import CD, probably available for less than one year.

Punk can be pretty damn hard to track down, considering many of the bands never get signed to ANY label or disband before releasing anything. I don't remember the name, but about a month ago I heard a song by this really obscure german hardcore band. Of course nothing was on iTunes (didn't expect it to be), nothing at Newbury Comics, etc..... needless to say I eventually just gave up  .
