Get the best (subjective) Fender you can within your budget and aspirations.

I know the Fender Custom Shop wouldn't mind.

I have asked myself that question, and too many times the answer was no, so I stopped asking. This allows me to keep buying cool guitars. 8)

if your guitar/bass is fun to play -- its money well spent.

***

on the topic of beginners who spend a sh**load of cash -- i think they would've done better to try a cheaper guitar first -- they might lose interest sometimes.

Yes, as a matter of fact I do ask myself that. I'm not in a band that's making it big-time so obviously very expensive gear would be nice, but rather pointless seeing as I only play for my friends and family. However, I would like a rig better than the one I have because my amp (Traynor Guitar Mate 20) really sucks and my fake strat (J Reynolds JR6AS) sucks too. Not anything too extraordinary, maybe just a little bit better

I have always said, My ability to buy guitars, far outweighs my ability to play them. I have found all the answers interesting to say the least. I guess if you have the money to buy any guitar, what the hell. As long as you enjoying playing it, who cares how much it costs. I have been buying and selling expensive and cheap guitars for the past two years. Seems when I yearn to own a certain guitar, I buy it! If I find out I don't play it as much as I do my core guitars, I'll sell it. I just got and sold a Rosewood Tele and an Eastman Archtop. I have owned a 52 re-issue, A few Rics, Gretsch's and strat's. I sold them because I seem to like the main core of 4 teles (paid under $500 for each of them) and my Clapton strat I got new for $700. I also own 2 Martins. I play the guitars that feel the best, sound the best and well, give me the tone I want. If they cost 4K and gave me the feel, look and tone, then I would play it. I say, go for it!
