Country life is as we all know one of the only ways to live! 8)

Well, Ceri, thanks for asking, and thanks for the compliments! It means a lot!
I have been busy working in the vaults again (this is serious spy lingo so don't worry if some of you don't understand it! :D) and have had little time to get further results on the bridge. Here's what I've got for today.

Image

The Nitpicker is quite handy in assessing and copying profiles, so in our case it comes in handy. I must admit I use it very unscientifically; there's surely some theory and usage directives behind this gadget, but for now we don't consider that at all.

As we know through Sir Ripitup's video linkage, the Sorella bridge was in fact quite high, so getting this bridge to rise up to it's standards is what we want. I added enough plateau to be able to carve the contour without risking getting too low again, and using The Nitpicker I could ascertain the beautiful curves of this lady's body, like so:

Image

This results in a curve we can work with. It's hard to photograph it, and in fact I copied the curve of The Nitpicker to a piece of paper and then gradually carved (i.e. sanded) the curve to match the line. Sadly I chucked the paper in the bin because it got drenched in tea so I have no evidence of that for you. I'm sorry.

Image

Anyhow, you can imagine how it works. In the above pic you can see how the feet are each absolutely straight, so it was shot before the carve. Here are a few pics from after.

Not perfect but getting there. 8)

Now as we all can clearly see, I only have the four saddle top piece available right now, which doesn't provide satisfactory chance to string up the guitar whatsoever....

....which is why I did it anyway. 8)

Ladies and Gentlemen: Please welcome to the Family heartily: The Lady!

Image

This really is just a mock-up, since I really wanted badly to hear her sing for the first time. It is a most mysterious, enchanting, unclassifiable sound, and the V-shaped neck itself is a joy.

So what I did was I got overexcited and took a crappy saw and trenched some ugly approximated slots to hold the strings and slapped a set of 12's on them. Obviously the next step is to put the childish attitude aside and make a really good top piece that will do her justice.
Until then, here's one more closeup so you can acknowledge my crappily cut saddle slots:

Image

So, now we're on real-time progress. Live, un-cut, in technicolor and possibly soon even in stereo. What do you think so far?

With shaking knees,

Nutter

P.S.: I'm sorry I haven't included any feline friends in this thread so far. That's because sadly, our old family cat passed on to another nice mice-filled world due to an unhappy encounter with a car recently.
However, if you'd like to share some pics I would be happy and would start off with a pic of the late great Karli, a good friend and lover of mice, meat, fish, dirt, cardboard boxes, dark dusty cobwebby corners and open fires. And snoring.

Image

Rest in peace, my friend; and thank you for 14 years of happiness. And plucking ticks. It was an honour to serve you.

Nice thread.

What is your plan for a real bridge? I mean the saddles part. The rest you have sorted.

She's looking good with the strings Nutter, temptation wins again eh, I know what you mean about the sound, listening to the utube clips it's a sorta step back in time feel, real nice I'm sure she's going to sing when fully equipt with a proper saddled bridge

Sorry to hear about Karli mate, he's probably sitting in a big cat armchair with a mouse supper and one of thse hats with milk on tap enjoying Top Cat movies.

edit, Karli gender mistake

Ah, here's the thing: I'm still contemplating, but in my mind there's a plan for a sandwich. That may sound beside the point, but it may not. 8) I'll try to put on paper what I mean and then we can all discuss it if we want. :)

Cheers

Nutter

EDIT: And thanks for the compliments :)

Howdy!

Nice job on caving your bridges new feet. I bet that looks easier than it really is. Impressive! :D

+1 Sorry to hear about your moggie. Rip says it best.

I'm intrigued to see what your plan for the string saddles is. I take it you won't be contacting Warwick for another replacement...

Keep us posted!

Andy

Hmm.. I somehow let this slip out of my notice.

Great work. Nice save, I was going to suggest you contact ZZdoc, but that would be a different kind of bridgework!

Molly sends condolences to you and your family for the passing of Karli.

Nutter,
First sorry about your cat's passing, I know how much like family they become. Now on to the bridge, you've seen the Framus vintage web page I take it? Are you shooting for the plastic string supports on top of the movable part of the bridge? I'm guessing that would more than make up for the height difference and allow for more accurate treble side/bass side string height adjustments.

Cheers,
John.E

Oooh!

Regarding the bridge saddle, would this be of any use to you Mr N?

Image

It's a spare uncut bone acoustic bridge saddle I had kicking around my spares box. Yours if you fancy it mate!

Andy

I'm so sorry folks, I've been caught up in all sorts of unpleasantry (work, mainly) that there is no update yet. What's more, I need some more wood so I will be ordering something tomorrow. The rosewood I have is cut so weirdly that I can't manage to extract enough raw material to manufacture the top piece.

The thing about the sandwich is that I want to sandwich a thin piece of plum wood between two pieces of rosewood or ebony to make a horizontal line within the top piece. Purely for optical reasons. So bear with me a few days (or beer with me, whatever you prefer!) - it should get done swiftly once I have the material.

Andy mate, thanks for the offer on the bone saddle blank! I think for this particular instance I will try to actually carve it a bit compensating out of wood, whatever that carving may look like in the end. So hold on to that piece of bone for now, maybe we could use it when we attempt that acoustic build, eh? 8)

Thanks for holding on, guys!

Cheers

Nutter
