First things first, what kind of price range had you in mind?

If you're not sure what you want i would recommend buying a used Squier jazz bass. They are good quality compared to the price, and if you find out later that basses weren't for you its got an nice resale value.

Baritone guitars are very different from basses because it's more like playing a normal guitar with really heavy strings. Danelectro makes several cheap baritone guitars that are great for beginners and proffesionels. They are normally tuned E-E (one octave below normal), A-A or B-B. The E-E feels a lot like a normal bass and it's hard to play chords without muddying things. The A-A and B-B tunings are more guitarplayer friendly. To play in the tuning you want you need to put on a set of strings that fits the tuning.

Ernie ball 28-37 will be appropriate for E-E and
Ernie Ball 28-39 will be appropriate for A-A and B-B tunings.

Good luck

Fender doesn't make them, but the flugelhorn is due a huge comeback. Ask Chuck Mangione.

A royal blue velvet dress would probably go well with your eyes...

Play a few basses and see which one works for you.

Very, very, very few, "Hmm, it might be fun to have a bass..." people who elect to purchase a Fender MIM Standard Precision or Jazz are later found wailing in pathetic, buyer's remorse sorrow. Very few.

In this opinion, shell out a purse of gold grickles, silver shekls, copper drachmas and iron rils for a 4-string Standard Pecision or Jazz, get a pro setup and keep it forever. Just like you will keep the smile whenever you plunk its magic twangers (Froggy).

If you think "baritone," think seriously...in this opinion, save much more gold and wait for a reissue of the magnificent Fender VI.

I posted this about 6 months ago. I never got real serious about it, but it's still in My mind. I was looking at a nice looking Fender jazz Bass in a pond shop a couple weeks ago. I need to take someone with Me that can set Me in the right direction. Thanks for all the info guys I appreciate it. 8) :)

I've played bass for a few jam sessions. It is a different world. Not as easy as it looks. It would be cool to have one for messing around on. I played on a Fender standard and it was fun. Honestly, to record I would play my guitar with a pitch shifter but that is because my bass skills are minimal. The standard goes for about five hundred or so. The one I played seemed like a good quality instrument.

Edit: looked it up, looks like it goes for about 580.00.

hey man, honestly if your just starting you should look at squier basses, they are a lot better quality than strats and cheeper, infact i have 2 squiers and love them, and hey they are easy to upgrade to make a lot more like real fenders :D

but precision or a jazz squier will probably fit your needs.

and for the dress do one of those sexy black strapless numbers

I know I'm repeating myself on every thread about Baritones but... The IMO the bass VI is not a real baritone guitar. It has a 30'' scale length, the same as a fender mustang bass, and is normally tuned E-E which makes it a shortscale bass with extra strings. A baritone is normally tuned A-A or B-B and can be played like a normal guitar. The Bass VI is not suited for guitar parts, and therefore not a guitar, but a bass.

But that dosn't mean that it is'nt amazing. It's just not a baritone.

+1

Don't forget, you'll need some rudimentary bass rig to play the instrument through as well. You can find clean, used BXR100's and BXR200's for pretty reasonable $$$ and they're loud enough and portable enough to haul along to a jam session or an open-mic night at the local pub.

Best of luck

Arjay
