that sounds interesting, forgive my ignorance but how is that possible in "real" time and if it is maybe we can set it up for a forum jam.

Here's a couple of jams (two of many) that I did with Tony :

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... ID=7241375

and another -

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... D=10317259

It's very easy if you're setup to do home recording.

Mike -Thanks for your very kind words!

I was looking around on YT, and found that the runner up Monte B. had uploaded a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_69FSm88rE&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL.

And, Monte had a video of the winner Richie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05NAtGe3Hh0&feature=related.

Tony, I don't know what your competitors performances were like, so I won't say how you did vs them. I also competed on the 5th.

I was the first one on. I sort of wanted that. I talked with a number of judges from past ones who all said "we hate all the guys who come up either dressed like SRV or with jeans, a t shirt and sneakers". The rules have playing as one criteria for judging, but performance, I think engaging the audience, and originallity as others.

I dressed the part as a 50's beatnick playing on the street. I actually had a berret like yours on backwards. Tweed sport coat and black button down shirt, black pants, black dress shoes.

I listened to every backing track. I am an engineer so I analyzed every one. I picked Jazz Swing Blues because it was so different from the rest. A minor affair (yours) was in my final list but because Jazz... was 4 minutes long and almost all the rest were 3 minutes long, I figured I'd have more of a chance to show myself.

I would honestly say that my performance was close to yours as far as a technical merit. At least in the same league.

I simply got outplayed. The guy who won was the weakest of the top 3 in my opinion and the judges gushing all over his 82 Les Paul may have contributed. The 2nd and 3rd were in a tie. One with a mim strat and another with a tele. I'll say that the guy with the Les Paul was a league above me. The other 2 guys did a play off for 2 minutes each with no backing track. I have to say that they would have been competition for Gary Moore (rip). They were that good.

I feel that things were fair, but I'll laugh that all 3 guys in contention wore jeans and t shirts and either sneakers or work boots.

This was my first one ever and I'll have to really up my game if I'm going to do it next year. The store manager had previously managed the Boston store and said that he believed that all of us in this competition would have been at the top of his old store's competition (which later made me feel better).

I went in this for the first time this year and went in expecting a 10% coupon and a t shirt, so felt ok. Yah....a little dejected for having done a good bit of work ahead of time and then not advancing to the store finals. Mine was at a smaller store. I'll likely attend either the store finals or districts, which is also close by at a larger store.

You went up there and played. I give you mad props for that. There are plenty of guys who would not have the guts to do so.

I've had an interesting time competing in KOTB for the past two years. The first time I had just barely begun playing blues (I had played guitar for three years at that time, but blues for only about six months). I was really nervous since it was one of my first times playing outside of my bubble of friends, family and teachers. I did a blues/rock/jazz thing and despite a total lack on confidence, I won the store competition. The judges liked it, but I had one of the contestants who lost get all over me about it not being bluesy enough, me not being old enough etc. I think he was just upset he got beat by a girl. :p

So the next year I did just plain, pure blues and I didn't even make it to the store finals. Go figure. The judges told me it wasn't commercial enough.

So my lesson is learned, this year I'm just going to play what I want to hear and I'm not going to really care about catering to the judges. Also, the sets of judges can be totally different from each other depending on the night. On my first year the judges were made up of funk and blues players. Last year, they were all rockers wearing Iron Maiden t-shirts. This year they could be polka musicians for all I know.

Bottom line, if you just went out there, played your best and had fun then that's the way to go. :) Music is too subjective to really be able to judge anyway, in my opinion.

Hey Tony kudos for going out there. I've played to that same track a gazillion times at home. The volume swells in the front caught my attention and I stayed thru the whole track just to see what you would do next. Really like your Strat too!
Glad to see you back in the forum mix again. :D

Well...I didn't make the cut, and there were only 5 contestants! The people who were watching was shocked that I didn't win. You can watch my 'non-winning' performance here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puqPD0L2Vjo .

ok tony, i gotta comment on this lol.
i think your mind wasnt in it, or you were a little nervous.
sounds like there might be some robert cray influences in there
to me. if you didnt intend on that you better go back and
relisten to it cause its there. im a cray fan by the way.
i loved the volume swells play. your pretty good with that and should have better used it as on of your strengths. i hope to see you up there again next yr or maybe in a different location re-entery (if its allowed) this yr, but it might be to late.
good job, nice try. you had the look tough. da look was on point bro.

you should have put one of your chuck taylors in his boy parts, and while he was on his way down you shoulda said "dAmn, thats twice in one night for you".
get use to it TGS. a lot of guys arent gonna like getting beaten by a girl. well the younger guys anyways. the older guys, yeah we might talk a lil junk to our buddies but we actually love it lol.
good luck to you. i hope you too record yourself this year and put it up for us to see.
you have the support from folks world wide, remember that.

dear Lord, monte B  , the "B" stands for blows.
this guy is working the crowd as soon as the backing track starts  , are you kidding me? his slide playing is something i wouldnt have brought into the public ear honestly.
leave way to much to be desired. i have a feeling ole monte left the stage knowing he was
the shiot already.

ok richie wasnt to bad. i think if he works hard he might be a bit to deal with next yr.

Oh, I'm a big Cray fan. I've known Bob since he started doing national tours back in the mid-80s. I was supposed to play with him when I had that bike accident and broke my elbow and two fingers.

i like cray myself. i think he is the only player out there where his voice matches his tone.
i cant explain that lol.
great player, powerful but soulful singer.
the defination of a modern day blues man in my opinion, Robert Cray.
