Congrats Nevin, this is a stunning guitar. Are you going to get involved in some serious Indie or surf music?

The "A" stamped on the neck heel after the date indicates a fretboard width one size narrower than standard -- instruments such as these are extremely rare.

Nice score!

Good score.

The 1963 Jazzmaster models with body and headstock matched paint were generally the Oly White, like yours. You said that you haven't raised the pickguard assembly but if you do you'll see what I have always called a 'bathtub' brass shield. It covers the entire body cavity for the electronics route. Those were changed I think ,and don't quote me on this because I could be wrong, in 1964.

It isn't visible in the photographs but I'm going to guess that under the Fender logo on the headstock in real tiny lettering it says 'with syncronized floating tremolo' and at the end of the logo it says 'offset contour body'.

The previous poster mentioned that the 'A' stamp indicates a narrower than standard neck and those are hard to find. Most got broken over the years.

Enjoy the hell out of that guitar man.

congrats nevin. now you need to get on ebay and buy you a quality display case for your jewel here. they go for about $400. get insurance on it with a proper apprasial.
renters/home owners too.
then send it my way so i can look over it at the autographs, and make sure those pups are as hot as you claim. of course you have been known to put up a quick vid and sound clip of other guitars.

The pickups were different with the '63 models too because that's when Fender went from the enamel wire to what they called Formvar and they stopped scatter winding. Not very hot though, most of mine are high 7's to low 8's.

Congrats on the acquisition!

That's a good-looking guitar. I had a 1964 Mustang with a "B" neck on it; it was just too small for me and I sold it to a Japanese guy with tiny hands. He loved it.

I want a new guitar. I don't need one, though. :?

Lady Armadillo has promised a reasonably priced axe (i.e., no vintage or Masterbuilt Custom Shop  ) as a graduation present when I finish college early next year.

I think she means to be in the $1000-$1200 range...if i were to run across a vintage axe within the range, I'd grab it up, even if just to re-sell it.

I'd have to like it, though, just in case it didn't re-sell and I was stuck with it.

Twew dat.

The bargains are still out there......you just need patience and perserverance.

(a big fatass wad of "e pluribus unum" in one's back pocket is a big help as well)

:P
