I have a Digitech RP355, great for linking up several different sets of effects for when I am sitting in for covers bands. A Boss ME20 which has a beautiful chorus and reverb. When I play out and am doing my original stuff it is pretty simple a Boss SD1 Overdrive and a Boss Super Chorus right into the amp.
ABS :D

i have both- and even use them together on occasion.

just got a zoom g2nu on ebay for a good price.

great sounds- easy to use and adjust.

some days i use it all, and some days direct into the amp

I use nothing but a effects processor. For a while, I was using a Zoom G1N but that went bust on me. Seems those are very fragile, so a few weeks ago, I found a used Digitech RP-50 with the adaptor for only 20 bucks, on Guitar Center's website, under their used gear section. One of their stores in Kentucky had it, and when it came in, there was hardly any volume which explained the low price, so I programmed it back to it's original settings and Viola! it was as good as new. Now it works great and sounds awesome.

Ha! Something happened to me with the RP-250.
It was sitting in the GC local to me for $45. Sales guy said I could bring it back in 30 days if I didn't like it. The expression pedal didn't work and the first bank of user presets were real low in volume. So I did a factory-reset and re-calibrated the pedal and all is well! Been great for over a year now.

Pedals for a couple reasons. First, the less tangible reason, I just don't like digital overdrive, distortion, or anything with Gain. It all sounds terribly inorganic to me.

Second, for the "clean" effects, I haven't found one with everything I like in it. I like the delay but not the flanger, like the chorus but not the delay, like the flanger but not the reverb.......speaking of reverb, I haven't found a digital reverb or Reverb pedal I like (analog or not). There has to be a spring involved or it's not reverb, it's "Slapback Echo" or Delay or whatever, but reverb needs a spring.

So, I prefer pedals mainly because I like MXR's chorus, Ibanez's overdrive, MXR and/or Boss distortion, and I like the warm true response of Analog gain, whether it comes from Tubes or Transistors.

Oh, one more thing. I don't really care for presets, even if I program them myself. I like to be able to twiddle a knob to adjust sounds on the fly.

I spend most of my playing time on my 60th Anniversary Strat, i run that into a guyatone ST-2 compressor. It's not the best compressor for the pickiest of tone tweakers but for It's price, It's amazing, a simple mod on the transistors and It's unbelievable. from the compressor It goes to the chandler tube driver. I run that into a Malekko Ekko analog delay. That runs into the amp, Blackstar Studio 20, again not the best amp out there, but for $600 bucks It's amazing. In the effects loop I'm running an old Digitech TSR-24(used mostly for EQ,) and a relatively new TC electronic M-350( for a little reverb, more delay, and occasionally when I'm in the mood, a phaser.) I recently added a Lehle little dual ABY box in front so I can run my input half dry.

I use both. I love the sound and tone of my Fender Twin and a small pedal board but lugging that to Church or any other gig is not fun or good for the back. I have a Blues Jr. that works great for most small venues with my pedal board but then again still alot to carry. I use a Podx3Live at my regular Church gig straight into the PA and I have programmed or downloaded most of the presets that cover the music we play. The X3live can sound a little sterile when compared to the headroom and responsiveness to touch a good amp offers, but the amp causes other issues with stage volume and the control freaks on the soundboard want all of us to run direct anyway.

Ah heck I think I'll sell some of this stuff and buy a Porsche... :)

If you're looking for clean in a multieffects pedal, look for an old Digitech RP1 or RP10/12. They have great clean, delays, chorus, flangers, and reverbs. I mean awesome! Anything with distortion, though, sounds weak and digital for the most part although you can get some decent sounds if you tweak enough.
I have both of them ............and also had a RP50 which is great for beginners to get a wide variety of sounds for nothing.

The GT8 is a great all around multieffects pedal. Great distortions, wahs, delays, reverbs, etc. Also, you can tweak on the fly unlike the digitechs.

Something else I've learned is that putting one of these units through a tube amp will make a world of difference. I gave away all but one of my solid state amps for that reason. Nothing else like a tube amp to get the sound you're looking for even when using a clean channel with a $@!& ton of headroom.

I'm afraid the GT8 did nothing for me. The best multi effects processor still sounds over compressed, Tubes notwithstanding. And I forgot about Wahs and the Digital expression pedal that are required to use them. If anything needs to be analog it's Wah-Wah pedal.

It's all subjective blah-blah yadda-yadda, whatever you want to call opinions, but I have a very discerning ear and know what I like and what I don't like.

Besides, lets say someone finally figures out a really good Digital Distortion, was it necessary? It takes a couple transistors, capacitors and diodes to make a really Great sounding Overdrive. It takes computer chips, a fast processor and an extensive program with flawless buffering to make so-so digital distortion. Was that trip really necessary or fruitful?

It is subjective in what you like or not but it also comes down to ease of use and affordability. "Ease of use" if you are starting out and want to hear what you can do with various effects. "Affordability", for the same reason but also the economics of buying multiple pedals at say the $75 range ( might be conservative $ amount ) . My last 4 pedals run approx $500. My used Digitech, cost $45.

Which is why I really like the Digitech. I can't afford to buy all these individual pedals.
I am starting to, but for a while I had no idea what each of these effects actually sounded like. Plus in playing lots of different music, I get the chance to sound like those styles.

And it depends on how you use your effects. Some people use heavily saturated tones, in which case a multi-effects processor would be better. Too many pedals running into each other means loss of signal and lots of extra noise. One noisy pedal in the mix can really screw up your whole chain.

On the other hand, if you just use a small amount of effects to color your tone, and maybe boost your lead tone, then an effects processor is almost Overkill. It's hard to dial in a little chorus with a touch of overdrive with a processor.

I don't usually go for line 6 but I like that pedal, I've heard of a few big guys in christian music using a line 6 pedal direct. If it works for them and that's the music you're playing, gofer it.

I use a combo, I bought an old Korg A2 off ebay a few months ago, and that's great for U2 as well as my own songs, but I also like pedals. A boss overdrive, carbon copy, crybaby
