I too am still learning, after 27 years I have realized that it is a never ending process. Every day spent with my guitar I discover something new. It's great!

Finally talked my dad into buying me a guitar at age 15 - holed up in the addition bedroom for about four months with a stack of Mel-Bay instruction books, then hooked up with some friends of equal (limited) skills. At age 16 I was playing live in a band that only did instrumentals, I started singing and it's gone from there - now 47 years later.

Picture above is circa 1966 - never quit, still practicing and learning - still playing live whenever I can.

Thanks.. 8)

I just picked up an instrument and away I went. Seriously though, I studied music in school and sat in the brass section in school band. I learned treble and bass clef, and went as far as taking music theory in 12th grade. Once I played an instrument and got reasonably proficient on it, I wanted to play another, and another, ...and another.

Actually, the amp and extension speaker on the right are Sound brand - don't know who made them, but my dad picked them up very reasonably from a "friend" in the business. I had to work them off doing sheetrock work for $1 an hour. It took me a long time, but at least I got to play them in the process!

my family is filled with musicians. dad played piano but guitar was always my passion and still is. after dad left my mother worked 2 jobs to support us. i begged for a guitar. she bought it with only one condition. LEARN TO PLAY IT. about the same time my sisters boyfriend gave me a box full of albums ranging from ac/dc to black sabbath to deep purple etc. my cousin showed me how to make a barre chord. that is when the monster was born.
i'm 42 now. i can finally tell folks i'm a halfway decent picker. i hope mom is proud.

I had an old hand me down guitar that belonged to my uncle and my buddy's father had an old guitar and Mel Bay song book lying around so we picked up the book and started teaching ourselves. The closest thing I ever had to a lesson was when I asked my uncle what the dots on the chord chart meant.

Sounds like there are a lot of us in the same spot with our Music. Iv'e been working on My stuff for a whial now and am finding that I'm a lot slower and it hurts more than it did when I was a kid. The big difirence is that I care now and am serious about it. That lets me work harder. Another thing is cash isnt as herd to find now days. Keep it funn. :)

see there the two key words right there, "reasonably proficient".
im still working on that part lol. i think its great you can do all of that.
its something to be proud of. 3 instruments i would love to play is
a harmonica, sax, and a banjo. its at that point i can offically say
that i have w/o a doubt earned my screen name. 8)

I had a guitar and amp (les paul knock off and a tube amp that i wish i still had). I would play a little but never really dedicated myself to learning anything. When i graduated high school i sold my guitar and amp. Hadn't done much after that until i picked up a hello kitty squire a few years back. I put some seymour duncan invaders in it and really loved the sound. Since then i have been buying guitars and gear and playing more and more every night. I regret wasting all those years from when i was young and gave it up. i would be MUCH better by now if i would have gotten some lessons and taken direction when i was young all those years ago. But hell, i am learning now so that is cool too.
