lol so what are you studying? playing and studying are two different things.
you will play what you study eventually though.

I'm in the beginning stages of learning how to play piano and violin, so most of my time is being directed towards studying those. As far as guitar goes I'm studying some of the simple Sor and Carcassi pieces as well as working on Giuliani's arpeggio exercises (All of that stuff is in Pumping Nylon, a book I would recommend to anyone wanting to take up classical). That and I'm studying the riff from "Scuttle Buttin," studying in that sense meaning I listen to it and ask how the hell SRV just did that; then proceed to wimp out and go back to practicing easier material >_>

wow you busy arent you? your doing both at the same time? why?
i would love to have the time to learn piano.
a good friend of mine is a keyboard/ piano player.
he has a band that is made up of nashville session musicians that
get together and play out from time to time for fun. they arent looking for cash
as a band just playing to be heard and have a good time.
he often tries to get me to learn the piano as well. i just dont have the time or even the space for that matter to take on a new situation like that. i wish i did, i would have a great teacher on speed dial. one thing for sure, the guy has no problems finding work.
he says he could be over booked easy, yr or 3 in advance if he needed to be.

I rarely "practice" in the true sense of the word.

I will go over old runs I've written or mastered in the past for warm-up, and then start to try to replicate the sounds/melodies in my head.

9 times out of 10, when I am trying to figure out somebody else's song, I'll accidentally play it wrong and then think, "Hey, that's kind of a cool riff..." and explore the "wrong" new riff, which often becomes a new song.
I've probably written four dozen songs that way--my incompetence in mastering other guitarists' creations leads to my "new" version, with my own lyrics and hooks, etc.

I've probably only actually learned how to play half a dozen of other people's songs properly--and then, it's usually just the rhythm line that's "correct"...which makes me unpopular with people who want me to play in their cover bands, but popular amongst people who are more interested in writing their own material. I'd rather do my own thing than try to perfectly replicate something that someone else already did (and probably already did it better than I can)...

I'd rather be "me" than the new "______________". (Fill in the blank).

Therefore, my practices might enhance my chops, but generally end up being an exploration of what I like to play rather than following a path that's already been trod multiple times.

And although learning new modes and scales is important, most of the most revolutionary guitarists we all reference and listen to (from Les Paul to Chet Atkins to Scotty Moore to Keef Riff-hards to Hendrix to Clapton to Billy Gibbons to SRV to...) were doing something "wrong", technique or performance-wise; if you want to be original, learn what you can, then do what sounds right.

I finally got all the backing tracks I wanted loaded into my Fender G-DEC 3 Thirty Blues Edition - had to take a lot of the "stock" stuff out and put in a bunch of my own loops. Now I've got about a hundred different bluesy backing tracks and I'm just working my way through them, one at a time. It all sounds very nice through the big Peavey PA.

Practice never ends. :)

it was hard to not go through this post and not quote the whole thing. i tried and it didnt work. why, because its like youve been looking through my window at night.
(goes to recheck for strange cars parked outside through the windows)
i feel you on every bit of this, twice even.
the part about figuring out others stuff and you suddenly stumble onto one of your own ideas is classic waycool. the part about you rather find your own as to playing someone elses is also classic waycool. im exactly the same way SA. the whole post i can agree on
as though i wrote it myself.
ok as for me and my studies, im going back over the major keys. redoing, rereading, and re-exploring the whole major key from begining to current and beyond. everything can be traced back to major and thats where im spending my time. learning all the proper theory along the way w/o getting into the crazy deep end like via, zappa, geddy lee, and scholtz folks.
i dont have the desire to swim with these guys, the theory heads.
i just want to go back and refresh and learn some of the stuff i missed.

oh man, dont get me started on backing tracks.
ive been on a hunt taylor made just for me in hell looking for backing tracks.
thing is, i want them on CD not on a ipod. i dont even own a ipod lol.
plus im looking for tracks that dont sound whimpy and digital. so you see my hunt before me already dont you?
ive manages a couple cd's but thats it. i did find a place where i can get a few cd's worth.
i stumbled onto them from a guy at GC.

http://www.50blues.com/bluesguitarlessons.htm

weed through all the lesson stuff and get to the backing tracks offer.
listen to the samples. i think they are pretty good actually. a few quality backing tracks in different keys, a good looper pedal, and one can be in business doing some learning or just having fun. the backing tracks have got to be quality stuff though to keep my interests.

You need to move that lamp away from the window so I can see your amp better. Also, turn the tone knob on your distortion pedal to the left...it will sound better.
