I've always thought that these MIM '70s re-issue Jazz Bass models were an excellent value......

Yes Nevin, as always, you're right. As long as we're on the subject, this might be a good instrument to start with:

A decent selection of body colors, and Maple, or Rosewood on the fretboards.

I miss a nice selection of color choices with many of the MIM instruments. I might actually buy a new a new Fender guitar (GASP!) if the Classic Player Jazzmaster were available in Ocean Turquoise Metallic or Sea Foam Green.

:(

You need to get an Ampeg Big Stud bass. It's based (bass-ed?) on a '51 Precision, but it has an extra P90-style pickup in the bridge position. There's a million things wrong about them--plywood body, the headstock is bigger than a Steinberg body, etc. They only made them between '73-'75 and only in "Dog Urine Yellow" finish.

I was given one as a reclamation project. Somebody had nailed furniture tacks all along the edge of the body and pickguard, and had countersunk/glued little rhinestones all over the body...I think they thought they were Bootsy Collins, because they also painted "Mr. Cosmic" on the case with red fingernail polish...I should have posted a picture of this bass as evidence that smoking pot is not cool (on the Psychedelic Revival post).

I fixed the electronics, re-strung it, but left the tacks on it, because it kinda looks like a Mexican saddle or something. 8)

The thing is, (after I've bad-mouthed this instrument) they play and sound great...

Lady Armadillo has been trying to get me to get rid of "that ugly thing" since it was given to me, but I told her I would only sell it if I could get either a '51-'56 P-bass or one of the early 70s Tele basses. She acquiesced after seeing how much one of those would cost. :P

I wonder if Super Kid has had too much e-numbers...............

We bought one of those RI Jazz BAsses for the studio and have always liked it. I'm just not quite into it enough to go and pay for a good one for myself.........mine is an old, trashed Epi that if you look at it from behind, you are not sure which end is which, the headstock is sooooooo big!

I think the AV62 jazz sounds like a good choice, mostly because I like the thought of having individual tone controls. Plus it has a nitro finish if that's what floats your boat.
But, if that Geddy Lee model has been sitting around the shop for a while, you could probably get it down to a pretty decent price.

Check out the Jaguar Bass,it has the slim neck of the Jazz Baass yet it has greater flexibility as far as tones go.If I were buying a new bass that's the one I'd go for, plus the slimmer neck makes for an easier switchover for guitar players.
