Welcome to the forum Shamrock!! :D

Personally I would offer a couple of different ideas that might help cos the kits I have seen at the lower budget end come with all the electrics pre-wired into the pickguard which just makes it a big Lego set..........no fun in that.

How attached are you to the setup in your Affinity? I ask this cos maybe you should consider modding it, dropping in new pups. For the cost of a cheap kit or even cheap guitar you can get some great pickups that will blow you away......teh choice is HUGE!!!

ALso and costing just a touch more, get a cheap 2nd hand guitar and upgrade it.

I found this a much better way of farting about learning the insides and workings of guitars.

Get some of the books suggested but there are many guys on here will help you every step of the way from all over the world.........which IMHO is awesome!! :D

JUst remember when you get started you have to post pics of the project...........makes it easier for the forumites to help.......and we do like guitar porn too!!

Rural Illinois, 2 hours away from the nearest Guitar Center and the classified ads rarely yield any worthwhile finds...though I got a surprisingly good keyboard for $100.

Break down the Affinity and then put it back together.

SAGA also has alot of quality problems too. I recommend a Grizzly kit. I got a telecaster kit a couple of years ago. The body and neck were in good shape and the fret job was surprisingly good.

http://www.grizzly.com/products/Telecas ... -Kit/H8068

Its a bit more expensive than it was when i got it but i still think its worth the money

And if you get a Saga set up right, you can always swap out tuners, pups, bridge, pots, pickguard, strap buttons (locks) to make it higher quality as time goes on.
