Hey all,

Could anybody recommend any good exercises to improve solo techniques as I'm running through some minor pentatonic stuff and it does get a little boring. The thing is, in terms of soloing, I'm a novice really. Give you an idea. I've just been learning back in black and am struggling to get to grips with the cool little Angus lick leading back to where he starts from (E Minor). It seems like I cant get the notes in in time when listening to the backing track. I've been playing for about 10 years now and am only just venturing out but it seems like a bit of an elephant to tackle.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers all

Jon

Practice with a metronome, and break up the scale into licks, keeping time with the metronome. Start out slowly and gradually increase your speed. Also start with the root note in a different octave on a different string sometimes. Keep breaking it up. 8)

Jonny, this is Roberts take on the intro at Dolphinstreet. The little lick starts on the 2nd 16th note so timing is the key. Hope this helps......Mike http://www.dolphinstreet.com/guitar_vid ... son-31.php

Hi Jon,

Don't worry too much just keep at it. Yup it can seem like a mountain to climb but perseverence is the key.

LIke MArvin said start out slow, sometimes painfully slow and learn the piece so that you are not concentrating on where your fingers go. Much like when you learn chords just memorise the shapes you are working with then speed it up.

Pentatonic can get a bit boring but try adding the different positions and starting from different strings, check out major pentatonic too and just keep playing.

Have fun with it though that's the main thing.

Mess around on the Blues Scale, learn a couple different licks until you begin forming an idea of how licks are made

Thanks for the response guys. I chucked on an online metronome, increased the speed slowly and am glad to say, I can do that little lick. I tried all last week to no avail, and have cracked it. The video posted on here helped too. The solo now, arrghh!

off topic, is your name a reference to Johnny D by J.F.A.? That was a good song to skate to, a little to masculine for my taste though

hey jon

welcome to the forum.
i too suggest a metronome. learn the different positions of the major
and minor scales. this alone should keep you busy for a while.
i also suggest some kind of study plan. get you the work book
from musicians institute. its a easy to follow work book that will
keep you moving forward and learning something new on every page.
every chapter has a test. all answers are in the back so you can double
check yourself.
