I loved radio as a kid having begun with my first crystal radio with alligator clips. Then I built headphones and my first real AM radio, later to be replaced with a gift from my father as he returned from Japan with an early 50’s flamingo coloured Sony transistor AM radio complete with batteries in a box (because they hadn’t hit our shoreline yet). Those batteries were soon dead, and more came my way with a Toshiba AM/Shortwave Japanese model brought from the land of the rising sun.

I mention this because AM could include well over 40 stations from Victoria, Vancouver, Seattle and much of the Pacific Northwest. Shortwave opened up a whole new discovery that I entered into a small book. Night time by the ocean gave me the best reception. I was totally hooked on radio.

Today, I have four or five AM stations here in the prairies, and only two or three are worthy of listening to on a part time basis. So much for inherited antique tube radios. FM is not much better unless it’s pop music and hip hop or CBC (similar to PBS) and, perhaps, a volunteer potpourri station. It’s not that the stations are bad, but they’re not great. I worked with an AM/FM/TV superstation in the mid 60s and early 70s. Radio was different, times were different, competition was different, and it was mostly live all the time. Different markets had and have their own take on programming and delivery so YMMV. I still get the pirate stations I heard when I was overseas, but that comes with streaming, add Bluetooth and Wi-Fi programs and some of the radio is very good indeed. IMHO.

I’ve had Sirius XM radio in the car since 2009. I was paying around $200 Cdn. a year for the first few years when I was always considering passing it up. Around the 5th. year I got an offer by phone. I was told that the offer came about randomly, and only very few (perhaps, in the teens) were given this offer, and nobody could say when or if it would come around again as it didn’t happen often or in a regular rotation. I never found out why or how my name was picked. CBC (the government owned network here in Canada) has, last I looked, 40% stake in Sirius/XM so this may not even apply elsewhere. For some reason I was one of the chosen few to receive a real lifetime account for a one time $500 deposit. As my yearly fee was due it was being raised to $240 a year. My math figured $500 to be a better deal, especially since it went with me should another vehicle replacement be involved.

Long story short, I have since tackled a terrible storm in the Rockies where and when no other radio was available. That alone was and is a comfort, and I enjoy it. Especially, since I was one of the lucky few. It sure is great to have on long trips. It was also good in a pinch when two aging mothers went for a ride and a push of the button played their preferred programming. I can walk away from TV and sometimes carry the program (such as CNN or BBC or . . . ) on in the car. The programming is very good and that’s without the extra stations not listened to. I have CD/USB available, but it’s not satellite radio. It is a great addition. The Internet may take over for some. Good luck with the signal and costs shared there though. Whether Sirius/XM is all worth the money, that is a personal thing.

If I hadn’t struck the lifetime deal would I have kept Sirius/XM? I can’t say. I do love radio though. Old or new.

The wife loves SiriusXM. I am not a big fan, except when we take family road trips.

We got a free one year subcription with our new car. It will expire in a few months, but I will keep it. There is nothing better on a trip, I hated trying to find a new station after they were out of range. At least with AM you could listen for a few hundred miles, you would lose FM after about 50.

+1. Less chances of having to hear the pork belly and soybean quotes too.
Although, sometimes you’ll hit some city areas where reception drops momentarily. That comes with poor planning or existing structures, much like cellular. YMMV

That’s always a good thing. Ironically, I just received a third party notification. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears ready. There is a timely curve ahead and, whether you have or don’t have Sirius/XM, changes may come our way. Some change already has.

I knew that they took over Pandora but didn't know that I can listen on my Amazon Echo.

Pretty nifty, Mike. I think this joint effort with Sirius/XM and Pandora is a recipe for only more success and innovation.

I can’t help, however, to think that there is a movement for more microphones in more places happening at an accelerated time rate. TV built in microphones. cable remotes with voice control, whole house voice automation, Siri, Cortana, Bixby, Amazon, Google, and more. I even have speakers that have mics that I have yet to find an application for since they are reported for future use and that has since past with newer models introduced, but the speakers still use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. At my age it’s not a big deal, but for the youth it may be if the technology gets into the wrong hands which is always possible, and marketing is driving that premise.

Naw. Couldn’t happen. Right?

There’s some pretty crazy robots out there. Maybe, we’ll have one at home that can do cover songs. Get a couple and you can have a band. :P

I very much enjoy SXM; essentially never listen to terrestrial radio anymore. My favorite for several years has been Little Steven’s Underground Garage, channel 21. Very wide range of programming, and the DJs are enjoyable and informative. Others I listen to regularly: Deep Tracks, Bluesville, Classic Vinyl, First Wave, Outlaw Country, and the Volume music talk channel. My only real complaint is that most of the channels except Underground Garage and Deep Tracks can be a bit too narrowly programmed, but I would subscribe if those two were all I listened to - between the two of them there’s almost always something worth listening on.

And Drew Carey’s Friday Night Freakout program on Underground Garage is fabulous!

I do too and Classic Rewind is another favorite. There's plenty to
choose from :

You can only listen on the Echo if you have the plan that includes streaming, which is an extra $5/mo unless you already have the "All Access" package. If you currently only have "Select", you may as well upgrade to "All Access" at $20.99/mo since it'll be the same price.

"Mostly Music" can get streaming for $15.99/mo, but you don't get the news channels.

 ROTFL Great followup Rich. What a bunch of Metalheads. The lead guitarist is a pinhead, the bass player must go through a lot of strings, I feel better knowing the drummer needs four arms, gotta get me one of those little fellas to hold the high hat (hilarious), and the singer has swag with the head bobbin'. All in all, I think none of us has to worry - yet. :P
I wonder if they sell boots with tracks. That would be a cool stage show.

I only have the basic 140 channels but during the free preview going on now
you can stream via Amazon Echo (I'm doing it now, while it lasts) til next week.

There is also an app so you can listen on your phone. I listen on my iphone at work sometimes.
