Mighta bin a nice gesture to at least acknowledge the folks who pay for this site with an option in the poll.

Just sayin' is all.

Sorry bout that...I was too lazy to type all the different makers of amps

Anyway I just tested out a Vox Nightrain, Peavey (not sure which one; it was about 300 dollars), and a Marshall (again I don't know which exactly; it was about $200). I like the marshall but I didn't really like how it sounded on the lower strings. Same kinda went with the Vox Nightrain. I thought it would be good for the lighter rock I play, but probably not much else. It had some great cleaner tones :D The Peavey I played really surprised me with the many effects it has. The gain was really good on it and I liked the clean and crunch tones on it. Ok well I pretty much liked it all on it, kinda like the Line 6 I just tested out earlier this week.

I'm still not completely sold on any amp yet though, although the Peavey moved up the list a bit now.

Glad to see you ammended your poll options. Just for kicks, add one more amp maker called Egnator. You might be surprised by how many hits it gets.

Ok, it's up there now :) Thanks for all the amp ideas. The only real problem I have is there isn't too many music places where I live besides really Best Buy, so I can't test out all these awesome amps everyone suggests. I've tested out so far Line 6, a Marshall, Vox Nightrain, Peavey, and I'm ashamed to say I couldn't get a Fender to turn on lol :P But anyway, what places are there to check out some of these other amps I've heard about on here?

when it comes to amps you need to be as careful and choosy as when buying a guitar.

I spent years playing through an old Peavey Backstage Plus and then got a modded epi valve jr.....the difference was unbelievable.

I got both of them as they were names I knew. Yeah prices vary massively between reasonable amps and great amps but it is easy enough with research and patience to find your ideal amp.

ANd also, you may find that when you are just trying amps out you come across a tone you had never bet on in some random amp you have plugged into cos you are cross-eyed with trying so many........

Don't limit yourself with what you try and most importantly give each amp a good try!!!! Play a good half hour on the ones that catch your ear quickly and really mess about with them and, if you are allowed, try them with your own guitar........I been stung with that one!!!

IMHO The classic Rock and Blues tones are the hard tones to get right.

not at all.

"Back in the day" we played the amps that are now considered to be "vintage".

All we did was, turn up all the knobs to "10" and RAWK.

What could be simpler than that?

arjay

i think a lot of the times people put more thought into things that what needs to be.
classic rock tones are of the easiest to get. back in the day amps were not as complex as
amps are today. there wasnt a whole lot of bells and whistles ya know.
we all have been guilty of over thinking things like this. a simple tube amp, a fuzz box maybe and there ya have it. cut back all the bells and whistles and you will be well on your way of that classic rock sound.

Hot Rod Deluxe III for the win! If you know what you're doing and you have a good distortion pedal you can get killer metal tone out of those things! Lol but you don't like Fender. Next best I've played would have to be a Line 6 Spider.

Hey guys. Long time no see! :)

I'm looking to get a new amp since the one I have is really only for beginners. It really doesn't have effects or really good sound. I'm looking currently to get a new one. I play anything from plain old rock (ex.- Bachman-Turner-Overdrive) to hard rock (ex.- Tesla) to metal/thrash (ex.- Megadeth/Metallica). I'm really not sure what to get, but a couple friends have recommended looking at the Vox Nightrain (w/ the head), Line 6 Spider series, and Peavy's. Sorry to say Fender isn't on the list but I don't like the tone and sound I get from them  I've tested out Line 6's and I really like the metal tone I could get out of it, it really suits metal really well. Vox Nightrain I've seen a video and to me it looks like it could fit the classic/hard rock side of me. But I don't know anything about Peavy's though since I've never tested them out.

I need some help with this. What can help me get the best of both worlds :?: :?: :?: And if you have any suggestions, please say so! Thanks a lot :D
"Oh yea and in the question of my budget, I'd say at most about 500-600 dollars. Preferably a little les if I can help it."

I have seen a used Marshall head in that range. A Fender Twin Reverb even used is out of range. All of the suggestions so far have been great. If you have to gig you can always rent a rig with enough power for the size of the venue. Have fun shopping!

Back in the"old"days we had to be content with whatever we could bum off other guys to play rock.Often that meant daisy chaining 4 or 5 10W amps together to play a gig-very low budget but it still got 'em dancin'.Like Arjay I believe it was said ,we often over think the amp buying process sometimes what's simplest is what's best.

Or two guitars, a bassist, AND a singer all plugged into a single Silvertone Twin Twelve.

Thus, the "garage band" concept was born!

Absolutely!

Until I got my own amp (a '65 non-verb Fender Deluxe) we all plugged into Rex's big Sears amp......two guitars, bass, and a mic.

The pinnacle of early '60s doctine!

I have a few rig's but all of them take a hand truck to get them to a gig or jam so I wanted to down size. Now you may scoff, but after playing almost every amp combo that the market offers I pulled the trigger on the Peavey Delta Blues 115. Yea I know it is only 30watts,but this baby is not only loud but you can do more that one trick pony stuff with it.
Oh yea best of all they are only $650.00 U.S.
This amp is a sleeper and really sounds Great! IMO !

Well KC, after hearing your recordings I can safely say that your opinion counts for a fair bit in the East of England. Thats a firey sound you have.

Watch out for Line6. I had a spider-Jam and while the "death metal" settings were great EVERYTHING else sounded terrible IMO. The crunch sounded almost no different than clean and the clean was muddy and had no sparkle whatsoever.

I would look at the Supersonic or get a blues Jr. and buy a digitech Death Metal stompbox.

If you want a good amp to play a variety of different sounds, a modeling amp is the way to go. Play as many in your budget and pick the one you like the best. Me personally, I am looking for my own tone.
