Go out and play a bunch of different amps to see which one sounds right to you.

Don't forget to check out Blackstar Amps.

Thanks for all the advice guys! I see there's a lot of other amps I should look at before I actually buy one. I guess I forgot to try the fender mustangs out  when I was at best buy. So just in general, what can fit the most of my music that I play? I saw Marshal, Blackstar (I think), and a lot of others.

Oh yea and in the question of my budget, I'd say at most about 500-600 dollars. Preferably a little les if I can help it.

marshall jmp-1 powered by a huge marshall poweramp of some sort (help me here mr. nik, waycool, nevin). i owned this rig when i didn't have a mortgage and fuel was 2 bucks a gallon.
nowadays it's a peavey valveking 212. (paid 500 bucks) cleans are great. driven it can be a little harsh but that fits my style. for my budget, it works.
my next amp will be a fender. i hear too many good things from folks i really trust.

An amp poll on the FMIC forum and not a Fender amp to choose from on the poll.
Mighta bin a nice gesture to at least acknowledge the folks who pay for this site with an option in the poll.

Just sayin' is all.

Sorry bout that...I was too lazy to type all the different makers of amps

Anyway I just tested out a Vox Nightrain, Peavey (not sure which one; it was about 300 dollars), and a Marshall (again I don't know which exactly; it was about $200). I like the marshall but I didn't really like how it sounded on the lower strings. Same kinda went with the Vox Nightrain. I thought it would be good for the lighter rock I play, but probably not much else. It had some great cleaner tones :D The Peavey I played really surprised me with the many effects it has. The gain was really good on it and I liked the clean and crunch tones on it. Ok well I pretty much liked it all on it, kinda like the Line 6 I just tested out earlier this week.

I'm still not completely sold on any amp yet though, although the Peavey moved up the list a bit now.

I still say a Fender Blues Junior is a good all around amp for basically everyone. It is simple, relatively affordable and has decent power for its size. They are easy to work on.

I view them as a good tone base.

i agree nevin, but the OP didnt list fender as an option.
im guessing the OP to be a young fella out sewing his oats
in the tone department. fender wasnt my first choice in those days either.
i love my blues jr tweed edition and wouldnt trade it. it has a spot in my collection
for as far into the future as i can imagine. not to worry, the OP might come around
in a few yrs.

OP might i suggest to you a egnator rebel20 or the very sweet Tweaker.
both of these amps have plenty to offer and fit well into your price range.
either will do you just fine and has a tone pretty much all their own.
when test driving either of these, make time to spend at least a half hour with each.
these amps have plenty of options and to appreciate them you will have to
spend plenty of time exploring them. warning: these amps are loud.

Glad to see you ammended your poll options. Just for kicks, add one more amp maker called Egnator. You might be surprised by how many hits it gets.

IMHO The classic Rock and Blues tones are the hard tones to get right. You can throw a wide variety of crunch pedals in front of an amp that does the above tones well but you can't do the reverse.

So far I haven't liked the Line 6 stuff because I'm not happy with the slightly overdriven tone. Plus I feel the nuances of the guitar tone get lost. (The advantage being cheap guitars sound the same as expensive ones with it)

in the same boat as you, i really need to get an amp. I have a decent stable of guitars and a beginners amp with a crap multi-effect pedal. I am not sure what size or features to even look for. Every time i start to look at amps or think about them i kinda get overwhelmed and just skip it. way back when I wanted a tube amp but as was pointed out on this forum many times a cheap tube amp is a waste of money and since i don't have $1500 to throw on an amp i really struggle with the decision. I should probably just grab a mid level mustang or 212 frontman and be done with it.
