Now that I get your original premise, here's my amended answer:

Texas Blues is my favorite because it's in my blood and it incorporates a wider variety of styles than the straight Delta styles--a bit more rock and roll as well as some outlaw country, western swing and even jazz influences...when T-Bone Walker went west, he helped to create West Coast Jump Blues, so Texas has greater influences than just Stevie Ray Vaughan. Plus, what other state would embrace two cross-eyed albino brothers and some guys with 3-foot beards and fuzzy guitars?

Chicago Blues is next, because Muddy Waters and Little Walter opened my eyes and mind to things I had never been able to identify, until I got "The Best Of Muddy Waters" Chess album at the age of 14. From then on, I was hooked.

TexasGuitarSlinger reminded me of my love of Gulf Coast blues, with the cajun & zydeco influences as well as the Second Line rhythms that are sometime incorporated.

Delta Blues--because it's so elemental and raw and earthy--it's almost primeval to my soul...plus, since Muddy has always been such an influence on my singing, playing and bandleading, we have to remember that Muddy was Delta before he was Chicago.

In the words of Blind Dog Fulton (AKA Willie Brown, AKA Joe Seneca), "Don't you know that Muddy Waters invented electricity?"

thats the type of answer im looking for right here SA.
finally someone got it. (what took ya so long) anybody else now that we have an example now to go off of?

Also, think Houston around the '50s when Peacock Records was around. That's Gulfcoast blues. You could throw it into the separate categories of "Texas" or "New Orleans" blues, but why? Not all of Louisiana blues comes from New Orleans, and Texas blues is such a huge genre that it encompasses nearly every other type of blues in and of itself. If you have to be a little more specific about where in Texas it comes from, or you're talking about an artist who has both Louisiana and Texas roots (Gatemouth Brown among others), then Gulfcoast blues is the logical way to say it. :)

Thanks for informing them..we know it all comes from down here... :D

but the whole point was missed.
good reply from TGS indeed, but still............

I got the point, but I had to go. I ran out of time.

Back to the original subject, I honestly can't put my finger on exactly what kind of blues I like and why I like it. Every genre borrows from the others to the point where you can really just look at it like a giant web. If it's real, if you can feel it, then I'll like it. SRV opened the door as far as blues goes for me so naturally if someone or some style influenced him, I searched it out and listened to it. 99% of it I liked, whether it be Texas, Delta, Chicago or even British blues. My favorite blues artists are the ones who know how to put everything together and who borrow from many different styles for their sound. And that goes from everyone from Muddy Waters to Robben Ford.

So I guess what I'm saying is that anyone who blends different styles into their own and pushes the limits of the music of their time, those are the people who are my favorites.

Also: Slim Harpo, Clifton Chenier, Tab Benoit, Lightnin' Slim, Guitar Slim, Lazy Lester...early ZZ Top and the Fabulous Thunderbirds had elements of Gulf Coast Blues, and the style influenced Albert Collins as well as his cousin Lightnin' Hopkins (though they both strayed pretty far from the course). There's even some influences felt from Fats Domino, the Meters and other artists we think of as "NOLA" only.

The Screamin' Armadillos (my band) occasionally dips from this well, too.

Gulf Coast Blues also influenced the 1960s San Antonio scene; you can hear it in the music of the Sir Douglas Quintet/Doug Sahm, Baldemar Huerta (AKA Freddie Fender) and Flaco Jimenez. San Antonio was more influenced by the conjunto, Tejano and mariachi sounds, but the Gulf Coast Blues elements are there as well--just listen to "She's About A Mover" or "Wasted Days & Wasted Nights"--either of those could have been done by all the artists I listed above...and no wonder, it's only a few hours away.

Gulf Coast Blues is common in the area often called the "Golden Triangle", which is an area of Southeast Texas between the cities of Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange.

Someone (I think it was Derek O'Brien) once said the area was called the "Golden Triangle" because that sounds better than "Petro-Chemical Wasteland"...

So, yes, Gulf Coast Blues is a distinct style.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm talking about. :D

Texas Blues. I love this style because it's the blues we all know and love but ith so much more swing and rock in it. eg. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jeff Healey and Jhonny Winter

I've played blues for almost 40 years I guess, that's what the older guys were playing that were teaching me,it was their starting point, they told me to use it as a foundation for my lead and rhythm styles and go from there....it helped me a lot when playing blues/rock,Southern rock, styles of Clapton,Allman,etc.,whatever...even country.
At no time did they ever put the "blues" into categories, and break them down into this style and that style...it was just blues....I don't even think about what style I'm playing nowadays, and probably never will....but count off a 12 bar I/IV/V progression,or 8 bar,or start a swampy progression that needs slide, and I kick into gear.
Why? because I don't have to think about it,I just do what the song needs.
You can put too much thought into this and miss the point...entirely.

The breakdown of sub-genres and sub-styles has gotten out of hand.

RebelSoul is right, it's just blues. I guess because that label is so all-encompassing we have to break it down for a reference point...

If I holler out "play blues in C...", the band could be playing four or five different styles;

Even though it's all "blues", if I'm playing a Texas shuffle while the bassist is playing a Gulf Coast rhythm and the other guitarist is playing Piedmont and the drummer is playing a North Mississippi stomp...it may or may not work (sometimes the blending works out better than you think, and sometimes it's a bloody mess).

But if I say, "Let's do a Texas-style shuffle in C...", they're going to know what I mean and we'll hit something dead-on.

But as I said, the sub-sub-sub-genre classifications have gotten out of hand. I think it's because nobody wants to be lumped in with a style they aren't. Think about this: I used to play in a country band, but we weren't playing modern top 40/pop country like Kenny Chesney (I hate that style), we were playing Outlaw stuff like Waylon and Willie (and the boys :P )...if someone had requested a song by Taylor Swift or Tim McGraw, we wouldn't (and probably couldn't) have been able to do it.

I guess that's why we have the sub-labels like Texas, Chicago, Memphis, Gulf Coast, Piedmont, etc...so people know what to expect out of your band.

I even go out of my way to label my band as "Texas Roadhouse Music" (as opposed to Texas Blues or whatever), which encompasses blues, rock, Americana, Outlaw Country...that way we can play what we want to that evening, or even play to what the crowd ends up being. If we have a bunch of rednecks screaming for country (It's happened before), we can bend the set list that direction until they're all drunk and then we can go on and play our regular set. If the whole crowd shows up and wants old 50s and 60s rock, we can do that until they're all drunk and then we play our regular set.

Our success seems dependent upon how inebriated the audience is...

thats a little better. you dont see many people talk about willie dixon on here.
as a matter of fact, i think im the only one lol.
i like oh willie. hes got that voice ya know. you can feel the words hes singing
very much like you can feel clapton or jimi's playing.

I always think of Willie Dixon as a composer, arranger, studio engineer, producer and bassist more than a singer. His vocals weren't bad, but he generally was better at all the things I just mentioned, IMHO.

He was one of the greatest blues lyricists ever, though...he could be funny, poetic, angry and poignant in his words.

One of the greatest travesties in music was the fact that Led Zeppelin basically ripped him off completely on several occasions (as they did Robert Johnson and others, too). They didn't originally credit to him. Yes, they wrote new music and totally changed the arrangments of the songs, but those were his lyrics.

your right as usual SA. he could really make short work of a stand up bass.
i think a lot of people ripped him off actually, but you never se him in the credits anywhere. i love the song 7th son. i just like his voice SA. theres something about it that fits the songs he writes very well.
