i have a question about something im unsure of.
does the army put a soldiers name on a aircraft to "honor" him
for any reason? now hes not the pilot in this case either nor has he been
in any war type situation. he just the standard joe who good at his job,
been in maybe 1.5 yrs.

I am a recently retired SMSgt and 28 Year Veteren of the USAF and I can only speak to how we do it, not sure about the Army, but believe they do something similar as does the Navy and Marine Corps.

In the Air Force the Pilots name goes on the Aircraft along with the Crew Chief that is responsible for the aircraft. The Crew Chief is the mechanic that has overall responsibility for the aircraft. This is done in the Fighter world (F15s, F16s, F22s, etc.)

For the bigger cargo aircraft, they do name the aircraft for example the C17 (the AFs Newest Cargo Aircraft) they paint an honorary name on it, such as "The Spirit of Bob Hope".

Hope this answers your question.

Thanks. It was truly my honor to serve our great country. I had a great career and have been to more country's and places than I could count.

The road to becoming a crew chief basically you enter the AF and choose to become a General Aircraft Mechanic...as you are trained and your experience grows you go up in rank and become a Non Commission Officer (NCO). You then go to more training and you gain your 7 Level...a fully trained mechanic. At this time you can become selected to be a Dedicated Crew Chief which means you get your name on your aircraft. This usually takes about four to five years if you are really good at it...but it could take six or seven but usally not more than that.

I had the pleasure of getting a incentive ride in an F15 Eagle Jet Fighter Aircraft ( I got this for being my Air Force Bases NCO of the Year... and let me tell you that is a ride you will never forget. We took off and went vertical with full afterburner, and it was a blast! We were just screaming...just one of my fond memories over the years.

Rust-pickers like to name their boats after Naval heroes, politicians, cities, states, and the occasional successful maritime combat engagement.

Soldiers are usually too busy painting dumpsters to give a chit about naming a piece of gear.

your very welcome.
the folks on here tend to make it a good practice to show our
appreciation to our men and women in our armed forces, and to those that choose to serve and protect.

Can't speak on other branches, but in the Army, our names were applied to the front glass of our vehicles with vinyl letters. Not as an honor, just to make it a little easier to find our trucks in the motor pool.

When I was in the Army we put our names on our vehicles. It is usually the driver and the vehicle commander. I was never in an aviation unit, but pretty sure it's the pilot and copilot.

Never saw much of that in Vietnam. Some of our ships were named or had modest artwork though. The Loach I flew most often had a "NIXON'S THE ONE" bumper sticker portside, below the door sill.

A friend of mine was in the Cav. Scouts in VN and flew in Loachs, several times they had some really hard landings...like in crashes.
It still messes with his head, because in one crackup the bird was on fire and he was trapped underneath,he hasn't told me that story, but his wife has...I don't ask him too much.

I never was in a combat situation. Spent all my Militery time 65-70 running WW2 Vintage Mike Boats (Large Landing Craft) on Puget Sound. Wee were never asigned to one boat long enough to put a name on anything. You know the vibrating sensation you have after rideing a Harley all day. After a day on a Mike Boat you would have that sensation for days.  My thanks to all you Vets on the Forum.
