Hey guys.

I'm thinking about getting a microphone (I was looking at Shure 57s and 58s), but I don't know what other sorts of equipment I'll need with it. Other websites are fairly vague. Some say you can plug into a guitar amp, some say you can't. I don't want to blow up any of my amps.

Does this mean I'll have to buy a mixer and PA system and everything else as well? What sort of equipment do I need to buy if I'm getting a microphone?

I'm planning on just keeping it in my practice space, but it would be cool if I could use the setup live also.

Take it from a guy who had no PA for years (I used to use a silverface Bassman ten in a pinch) you can plug into a guitar amp with no problem or harm to the amp. Remember, that's basically what harp players are doing anyway-plugging into an amp with a mic.

You'll have to get an adapter or a cord that goes from XLR to 1/4" plug to go into an amp. I personally think a Shure SM58 is the best all-around vocal mic for the money. There are other good ones out there, but it's hard to beat a classic. Mine is 20 years old now and still going strong.

For micing an amp thru a PA, the SM57 is hard to beat as well. Although those flat Sennheisers that you can drape over the top of your amp are pretty good, too.

If you're planning on using both mics at the same time, or even one mic with an instrument, I highly recommend this Mackie mixer for $100 :

The mic pre's are top shelf and the unit is pro quality!
