Hi Mr Cool: my gigging days are long behind me - and were never exactly stratospheric even in the day. So I have no experience with these things and don't suppose now I ever will.

However. The first time I ever saw Joe Bonamassa was in a small venue with a standing audience of 400; I was about six feet from the front of the stage and so was hearing the sound coming straight from the back line, sans PA. Joe is well known for using those transparent baffles and I'm here to tell you the guitar sound I heard that night was the best damn thing my ears have ever encountered, bar none. And I've heard plenty. I'm certain that part of the quality of what was going on was that the baffles meant he could really drive his amps flat out, and yet not punish the audience with stupidly high volume levels - which tend to get in the way of appreciating really good tone.

I've heard Joe several times since from different parts of various venues and his sound is always amongst the best. You don't get tone hound stuff from me very often, but I'm convinced those baffles are part of what is so good about his. Part, anyway.

And just a couple of weeks ago I saw a young woman in my bit of the world who is very much a Bonamassa follower: Chantel McGregor. She's jammed on stage with Joe and I couldn't help noticing that she also had the plexi-glass baffles around her Egnater rig, obviously in emulation of her hero. And her amp sound was pretty fine too. So I think there's something to it.

On the other hand, I don't see the point of it for home playing. Just find a smaller amp: that's the solution in that situation.

My thoughts.

Cheers - C

I never used them before, But I imagine it's on the same basis as when the last band I was in,(about 15 years ago) we did a lot of DIY recording on 8-track and 16 track live. Isolating the guitar and bass and drums in separate rooms. We were all in the same room with headphones on, playing live, but the amps were isolated away,in different rooms, It recorded better that way. It gets too noisy with all the sounds bouncing around the same room miking up amps. You gotta have separation. We weren't on a budget to afford that stuff. 8)

First number I ever heard him do - from six feet away. Now it's your first too.

If that wah solo doesn't do it for you...

i like this song. i might put this rhythm in my looper and record it to my Boss BR for
a nice solid backing track. might even transpose it to a couple common keys too. very cool stuff.

Others will feel differently. But I still think You and Me is his best to date, and the ideal place to begin. Not quite a perfect album... but not far off, to my completely irrelevant taste. Live From Nowhere in Particular isn't a perfect live album either, but there's stuff on it that grows and grows on me.

Far as Sloe Gin is concerned, the latest live take always tends to be the best. That gentleman hasn't finished thinking about how he approaches that number, and it just keeps on improving.

Cheers - C

is he a les paul guy only or does he use singles too?
i dont see how some folks just stick with 1 style of guitar
at all times. i cant do it myself.
