My cheap piece-o-crap (yet oddly good sounding) Sony headphones are crapping out, starting to get the death rattle. I have NO damn clue what are and aren't good headphones, so I could use a few suggestions. Tried Sennheiser HD-205II's, but they had horrible mids and made everything sound meh. :?

Try Sennheiser with higher number, they have helped making me deaf for the last ten years   . I also hear  that Sony make pretty decent headphones for the buck.

Hi Floyd,

basically there are two two and a half kinds of headphones. Reference headphones, HiFi headphones, and in-ear earphones.
The "reference", or "studio" headphones usually do not sound "nice", they're designed to reproduce a signal as faithfully as possible, letting you as an engineer know where weak spots are. They're not great for jamming or enjoying music, often lacking bass. Prosumer is probably the way to go in your case.

So first of all we should rule out the in-ear ones. Any earphones are liable to damage your hearing, however those in-ear ones really should be banned. But back to topic.

It depends on what your purpose is, and reading the thread title I would say go for some HiFi (i.e. "consumer") headphones. However, should you also be interested in a good neutral sound, for instance to listen to certain signals should you be recording, I suggest getting some "prosumer" headphones.

There's been a lot of development there, and "pro" Brands are trying to get into the consumer market, for instance Shure. Their line of headphones is highly recommendable for a guitar playing prosumer.
Another great bang for the buck is made by Beyerdynamic. They really worked on a double diaphragm per ear system, and put some extra effort into making them as comfortable to wear as possible.
In general in your case I'd go for a open back style, since you don't really need it to be absolute soundproof (re: recording situation), and it lets soem frequencies out. My intuition tells me that also heat and moisture can escape, but I may be wrong. ;)

I use AKG K271 Studio (the 55 Ohms version, dunno if they still make'em), and I'm really happy with it. It's very light and automatically switches off when you take it off. However, it's not cheap and my ear lobes get a bit squashed when recording a lot. But for that they invented breaks! ;-)

All previously mentioned manufacturers have good and excellent products in various price ranges. Try out if you can.

My best

Nutter

Sennheiser CX300s are good and can be had for fairly cheap online, also look at the sony ex series.

Try Audio-Teknika mf30 or mf40's. They're comfy with good sound and inexpensive at around $50-80. It also works well with my strat and frontman amp. :D

I like AKG headphones. I find that at each specific price point, their headphones impress me the most. I have the K44 MkII's and for 50 bucks, they couldn't be any better, they sound great. And they're Loud!

I bought a pair of AKG phones and they are really comfortable (I'm super-fussy that way) and the sound is very clear and accurate.

HOWEVER, they fell apart after a few weeks. It took some clever, creative work with a soldering iron and quick-setting epoxy to repair them. They still are comfortable and sound the same, but they are now fragile and cannot stand up to anything but gentle treatment.

Paid about $120 for the suckers, too.

Anyone used the online company accessory jack? They seem to be rather cheap (maybe a little tooo cheap), and i think they are based out of asia, and they worry me a bit...

Im looking for some senheisser somethings. Maybe wireless (rs 170's or 180's) maybe something that just sounds good.
