53magnatone, you make some good points. I love the sound of an Acoustic amongst Electric instruments in studio recordings. In big live situations, not so much.

That said, I went to see Heart a couple years ago and Nancy's acoustic was cutting through and sitting comfortably in the mix. They did something right.

As for the "Unplugged" approach, it's also a matter of doing it right or coming off like a gimmick. Picking the right songs or rearranging them to fit the acoustic setting makes all the difference. Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan are example of doing it right, Poison and the other unimaginative rockers do it wrong (all opinion of course).

when I think of acoustic and rock mixed I think of this song. Although not the best version perhaps I liked the string section.

No....SRV was anything but a flash in the pan, there is a lot to learn from his approach, but attempting to copy him note for note is IMHO a waste of time. As it is trying to play anyone else's riff's note for note. Study them, incorporate them into your playing but....make them your own with your own interpretation, reverse them, edit them and so on...
This is what all these people have done, from Bonamassa to Mike Bloomfield to George Lynch to Frank Marino.

One critical component I see missing in this thread is the mention of Traditional Acoustic Delta Blues playing, such as Mance Lipscomb, or Elisabeth Cotton.
A great educational series into those styles are the books by Stefan Grossman. If you really want to play acoustic blues those will keep you occupied for a long time.....
