Not sure why MTV ever called that series "unplugged" as that is an Acoustic/Electric he is playing and it IS plugged in :)

Here is one of my favorite acoustic versions of an iconic song...

OH and I know they are maybe responsible for parodies rather than straight acoustic versions but I love this.....

I would have to say that my favorite acoustic version would be Tesla's version of "Signs". It's just great.

In general I dislike acoustic versions just due to the fact ( my own subjective opinion ) that truly acoustic and electric playing require complete opposite sets of dynamics.

Clapton's unplugged reworking of " Layla " is a prime example as in his own words he describes how the song had to be reworked, since the driving riff of the song just doesn't work on an acoustic .
However in an acoustic delta blues version.....it becomes an entirely different, refreshing version and I have to say I like both for their own particular nuances.

I have listened to bands with their " unplugged " sets and I find it more gimmick than anything else. It's one thing to be in a coffehouse and listening to a duo or trio play acoustically, there is no need of stage monitors cranking the volume and since attendance is a limit of at most 50 to 150, the acoustic parameters do not get lost while attempting to push thru a large audience.

That said, I don't think anything sounds worse than an acoustic run thru a large P.A. and attempting to be heard over an electric Bass, Guitar and Percussion.
There is a local/regional band which I often see, Lead Vocal/guitarist, Rythm guitarist/backup vocals, Bass/ backup vocals, Drummer and the third guitarist/backup vocals, always on an acoustic. It is impossible for him to cut thru the rest of the band and have his own clarification. I would love for him to grab like an ES 335 or any semihollow guitar and become another color in the sound. ( the lead is played thru either an El Rey ( which is a Matt D'ambrosio custom design ) or a strat or another custom made very strat like guitar. The rythm is playing a Gretsch Jet.)

There now I'll anticipate the firestorm.....

53magnatone, you make some good points. I love the sound of an Acoustic amongst Electric instruments in studio recordings. In big live situations, not so much.

That said, I went to see Heart a couple years ago and Nancy's acoustic was cutting through and sitting comfortably in the mix. They did something right.

As for the "Unplugged" approach, it's also a matter of doing it right or coming off like a gimmick. Picking the right songs or rearranging them to fit the acoustic setting makes all the difference. Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan are example of doing it right, Poison and the other unimaginative rockers do it wrong (all opinion of course).

Here's an SRV example

Although I don't have a link to it there's an acoustic version of Jimi Hendrix playing Hear My Train A Comin' sitting on a stool in a stark studio playing a Zematis 12 string. It is a poignant video of Jimi in a quiet almost vulnerable mood.It certainly shows his shy quiet side that is so often ignored.
