They say that you can't just pickup a guitar and start playing.Thats what I did took my little guitar, looked at a chart and learned my first song.Same with bass just started playing all by myself.Did the same with panio.Never did understand why others can't do this. Can you?

That saying simply say's that you can't do something you have never done and without practice and then be able to do it well the first time, which I agree with. And I'm pretty sure that the first song you learned took you some time and was somewhat frustrating, unless of course it was smoke on the water  , And furthermore I am willing to say that 99.9% of people that that say they picked up and instrument and were playing Jimi Hendrix 2 minutes later are lying. Learning to play an instrument is hard and takes work, I know someone that said he picked a guitar up and was a natural and I'll tell you this, he is a complete douche-bag.

Just my 2 cents.

PS: I have nothing against Smoke on the water its just that out of the 10 billion different ways to play it 9 billion are pretty easy

It was a jimmie Buffett song. Not saying I played the best but I just found it easy.Am I different? I know a kid who can play much better than me but I'm the only one in my school jazz band that can hear that this guitar is out of tune by just listening.

Hmmmm. The first time I picked up a guitar what I did was try to play I think it was money the main riff is easy but back then I couldn't move between all of the frets and strings, I had to concentrate entirely on one of my hands which did not help me play, after about 2 weeks I was able to play the main riff ok'ish.

The first time I played a guitar, within twenty minutes I was playing "Sympathy for the Devil". Yes, it's only four chords, but I did okay. The switch from E to D was kinda tough, but I kept up with the guy who was teaching me the chords.

An hour later, I was playing and singing it at the same time. It wasn't perfect, and I sure didn't play any leads/solos (rhythm line only), but it was ok.

An hour after that, I was playing (the rhythm line again) and singing Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy" too. Not perfectly, but playing it.

...so yes, you can play an instrument the first time you pick it up, if you're familiar with the song and are playing only a simple part, such as the rhythm or a basic riff/melody.

By the way, the best pie is my mother's pecan pie. She doesn't make it too sweet like most people do. Her lemon meringue is a close second. The woman's not a great cook, but she can bake pies very well for some reason. :?

Unfortunate that you've met someone like that but I have a feeling that we all have at one time or another. Taking to an instrument or an activity so that it appears that you have done it before to an observer or appear a natural at it would be a gift that everyone possesses, but, not everyone nourishes that gift, by practicing and rehearsing in such a manner that causes talent, skill, craftsmanship, a gift to grow and flourish. I'm thinking that the guitarists that we love the most were the ones that spent the most time in the woodshed. 8)

I am 68 now, and started when I was 11. And you hit the old nail right on the head. I did exactly that. All I had to go by was a memory of my Grandpa and his guitar, what a sound. and I somehow managed to pick it right up. I lisoned to the radio and to records along with jaming with a friend or two and came a long way in just a fue years. My big mistake was allowing other things to take away from my music. The MUSIC after a time left me without my even knowing. Then I dident have time to practice any more. The onley time I found myself Singing was in the shower or sometimes in my car. I never played my guitar, in fact I loaned it to a friend for his kid to play. I never saw that one again. Now that I am OLD by your standards, I have time to play. Now its not so easy, in fact everything comes harder and much slower. So take it from me, dont ever stop. Keep your Music close to your hart. Give it some importance. If it's what you do best you shold probably try and make a liveing with it. A lot of guys have done very well. :)
