The drummer is dead, the bass player is in a coma with three fingers worn off--but Tab is still playing!

Since it was our anniversary, Lady Armadillo & I had better things to "do" than update the Forum :P ...

The show was great, the venue (Granada Theater) is awesome and we got to meet The Man himself, cuz there was a free grip & grin behind the venue afterwards.

First story--we had seats in the balcony, last row, left hand corner, right in front of the auxilary bar. The place is set up to where there are no bad seats, but we were in possibly the furthest point from the stage.

The opening act (Sol Driven Train) started out strong, with a NOLA second line rhythm thing going on. Funky, fun and synchopated. Very good guitarist, great bass player & drummer, dang good sax and trombone players...guitarist, bassist, sax-ist & trombone-ist all sang, and would be able to be the lead singer in any band. I was prepared to be wow'd for the whole evening. And then they started the second song...

Musically, not bad at all. Not as punchy and exciting as the first, but the vocals were still good and the musicianship was strong (as it was throughout their whole set). Lyrically, however, it was almost as bad as Rebecca Black's "Friday". Sample lyric: "We're floating out in space turning on an axis, which is why our seasons change..." Thank you, Mr. Professor! I didn't know I was going to remedial science class. :| It was almost like somebody handed him an encyclopedia and said, "I bet you can't write a song with this!" Well, he could, but he shouldn't have.

Their set was spotty, with a good song followed by something as stupid as the one I just mentioned, but it took a really strange turn when they started playing the song "Africa"...yes, the Toto song. Believe it or not, it sounded really good (great harmonies). Toward the end of the song, the drummer started taking a solo that sounded somwhat tribal, everyone put down their instruments and picked up drumstick or two. Bongos appeared, and two of the guys went to the edge of the stage and started playing the lighting rigs, they grabbed trash cans, jumped down onto the floor/pit and played whatever they could with a big tribal beat. It was like a mini-"Stomp" show...very cool. 8)

Their encore was "Will the Circle Be Unbroken", done NOLA-style. Tab's bassist and drummer came out and joined them, so there were seven people on stage, playing in perfect harmony. It sounded like they mixed "When the Saints Go Marching In" with "Will the Circle"...very cool again. They redeemed themselves for the weird crap in the middle of the show.

...more details later.

Tab Benoit, part II
Great Venue:

I was crowned “King of Upgraded Seating” by my drummer several years ago. Every time he went to a concert with me, we would end up in considerably more expensive seats than we paid for…the trick is to watch for an opening and walk towards it purposely, like you know what you’re doing. Don’t pause or look at ushers or security personnel. I got to meet a dozen famous or semi-famous guys like that, by walking backstage and hanging out with them, pretending I knew what I was doing.

This time I didn’t have to sneak, though; there was a private party in the section before us (this theatre has removable seats, so a person can buy a whole section and have it set up the way they want—food, chairs, no chairs, standing, dancing, whatever) and they were set up to where we weren’t going to be able to see. Right after the opening act (while the stage was being turned over) the executive chef noticed this and got the manager to move us and another couple to better seats. We ended up about 6 or 7 rows back from the stage, on the right side of the floor…the King continues his reign!

Tab played a Telecaster Thinline Deluxe into two Category 5 Amps—a VOW45 and a VOW90 (look them up—they have “the tone of the murderer” )…nothing else, not even a tuner pedal. He played most of the night with his sunburst Thinline Deluxe, he broke a string at the beginning of song 2 or 3, and kept playing; it didn’t seem to slow him down one bit or change how the song went (it was a song I heard him play before). He played another natural-finished Thinline Deluxe for a song or two while his tech restrung the guitar; it sounded almost exactly the same, except it had a slightly brighter tone.

Find his signature amps here: http://www.category5amps.com/

Find his signature guitars here: OH THAT’S RIGHT, THEY HAD TO MAKE THE 3RD DIFFERENT SIGNATURE MODEL FOR THAT JACKASS FROM SLIPKNOT AND THEY DON’T HAVE TIME TO MAKE ONE FOR TAB!! [/rant]

Well, there was one effect--an alligator head on the VOW45.

Image

He played his normal great show—funny stories (especially about how when watching “Sons of Guns”, which uses one of his recordings for the theme song, and seeing his cousin, who is an Elvis impersonator, shooting at something with an AK47), spectacular playing (I gotta figure out how to do that “washboard” thing on the guitar the way he does), killer band/rhythm section and great singing. I didn’t want to go to the bathroom in case I missed something. The Lady Armadillo still thinks he’s cute (I find it peculiar that all the men she finds attractive look nothing like me. Hmm :? ).

Image

Video of most of the final song: Please excuse the crappy iPhone sound quality and the fact that it cuts out at the end due to the 10 minute limit on video posts. Note the “washboard solo” beginning at 8:30.

Lady Armadillo, Tab Benoit and some idiot who thinks he can play guitar:

You have to look under a rock or in a cheap beer store nowadays.

Back when I used to imbibe of the brew products, Lone Star and Lone Star Light were like $5 a case, so they were both big players in the Armadillo household, but I haven't touched any of the stuff in 13 years, so I don't even know if they make it...I occasionally see a billboard around ("Drinking any other beer in Texas is treason!") so I assume it's still out there. Try a poorer part of town or a liquor store.

I wore her down with persistence...I chased her for about 8 years before I gave up and blew her off...then she started chasing me. We finally caught each other and now we've been married for eighteen years.

(If the timeline seems off, we met when she was 13 and I was 14).

Did you click on the second to last picture? It was a video. The sound quality is crappy during the song (iPhone video), but it's still kinda cool...he was rapping about playing hungry before the song. The guy could be a standup comedian, if this guitar thing doesn't work out.
