I record my practice sessions everytime. I start each practice session by listening to the previous session. That immediately tells me what I need to focus on. It does help, but having no talent makes it a long, hard road.

Maybe bad habit but maybe more a bad technique... but i have no doubt that it compromises my fretting hand positioning...I drive a LOT for work, and have been driving longer than I have been playing, so have a bad HABIT of wrapping my thumb over the top of the neck as if were the steering wheel so results in lousy TECHNIQUE. Makes it tough to do long stretches with my pinky because my thumb isn't properly positioned on the back of the neck. I am aware of it, and I work at it, but it's been a tough thing to overcome.

Am I nuts to think that this is the reason my thumb goes where it does on the neck? I have even tried using my right hand for steering more but it's a hard habit to break...

Wrapping your thumb over the top of the neck is not a bad habit if your using it for playing and are blessed with long skinny fingers. I use my thumb to play and I'm proud of it. It's a proven technique that can give you an edge.

As far as bad habits go, I guess mine would be my picking technique. But I've been picking this way for soo long that there's no since in trying to break it. I don't really see it as a bad habit when a certain way naturally comes to me so I'm just gonna keep picking this way. There's only one direction it can go, improvement.

Staying seated. It's a whole different ball game when you stand.

i have a bad habit of using my pinky when i should be using my ring finger,
i.e. power chords/5th's.

but it's never really held me back so i guess i'll try to get rid of it, but if i can't, oh well.

My worst habit or regret is not being a better musical "note" reader. Guitarists/Bassists are musicians too and I have often embarrased myself by not being able to sight-read my way out of a paper bag. Tabs are great... but suggest good music reading chops too.

Good idea U2scott, maybe even have the steering wheel strung! ...and Guit/Cane, unfortunately my thumb is like the rest of it's mates, short and thick. So it goes... but thanks for the suggestions :?

Clapton always uses his pinky when barring a shaped chords. I switch between the pinky and ring finger depending upon where I am headed.

I tend to slide my hand to the next chord, making my guitar sound like a pair of ripping jeans, instead of lifting my hand to the next chord :p

I tend to peruse the chicks at a gig and sometimes lose my train of thought while I'm singing/playing.

okay seeing as i've only been playing for a few months i have a lot

i like to finger pick more than pick pick (i have an acoustic right now so it doesn't matter i guess)

i use my first and second finger too much

i kinda suck at barre chords (although my guitar's action is nearly legendary it's so bad)

i'm not fast enough

but i've only been playing 2 and a half / 3 months so i guess i'm not bad for a beginner
