Some of you may remember a while ago a citizens group in our town helped defeat a planned subdivision in a designated park area-so we thought.Well the developer is back again with bigger plans to build a 12 lot subdivision of mansions for an elite few incringing on an area that last year National Geographic magazine named the most beautiful coastal area in the world. This also is within spitting distance of the largest seabird sanctuary in the world and on the famous East Coast hiking trail.A lot of people think that there is something very underhanded about this and we are planning a giant walk/demonstration on the trail on Earth Day-Good Friday.I would greatly appreciate it if you could look up the Face Book site: Help Us Save Ragged Beach,Witless Bay and read the whole disgusting story or email the council here: townofwitlessbay@nf.aibn.com / or if in Canada phone and give them an earfull here: (709)334-3407.We are only a small town but this area is pristine is filled with rare species of flora and fauna even the extremely rare mocassin flower grows on that very site but the town council is hellbent on pushing this through.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

That's the capitalist way, the voice of the people only makes a difference until someone coughs up a large enough sum of cash. It makes perfect sense in their way of thinking; they didn't like the subdivision, let's up the ante and grease their palms enough that the opinions of their community no longer hold any weight. That being said, I hope that the voice of yourself and your neighbors will be heard and considered and that you're able to help preserve one piece of the otherwise fading beautiful pieces of land in this world.

Witless Bay. There would be some symbolism in that name if mansions were built there.

if there is something truely rare living there then you need to contact organizations dealing with that "thing". much as i hate to say it get green peace involved.
them S O B's move mountains. get the local big tv crews involved like cnn msnbc and the likes. drawing attention to something like this and rare things within shouldnt be a problem with a bit of thought. if you can get that oplace turned into a wildlife sanctuary, your troubles are over. thats has a great chance of happening if you can bring proof and attention to the rare that live there.

I never thought of Greenpeace as they are not fond of Newfoundland because of our seal hunt which they print all kinds of lies and fallacies about, but that's another story. The proposed area is a nesting ground for many species of shore birds and of course the flora I mentioned. The area is also designated parkland and council has circumvented and ignored many of its municipal bylaws to push this through.A couple of councillors resigned over this and new ones ran on a platform stating their love of open spaces and their stance against over development yet rolled over with the rest of council once they got in. I firmly believe that 90% of politicians are crooked and half of the other 10% are corrupt by the time they leave office so that leaves 5% with any morals.

lets not call them crooks for the few PC that we have her, let say
folks with flexable morals. you know we have a couple.
listen, you need to bring attention on a level much higher than a few
locals willing to give their autograph.
your gonna have to show the media that there will be damage done
if the proposal goes through. you have to she that there will be a loss
if its allowed to happen, an irreplaceable loss infact. money goes a long way
in things like this bro. you have that weight against you.
the contractors are gonna use the speach that with all the added people, and the
property taxes that will either be generated or raise, the economy will flourish.
your gonna have to show that the loss is more valuable than the "positive"
impact this building proposal will bring. you wont do it alone i promise you.
your gonna have to get some heavy hitters involved.
the media, green peace type groups, conservationist type groups.
more often than not, when a group like this gets turned down the first time,
its just practice for them. they come back with bigger numbers, more facts,
more confusion, and lots of palm grease. they rarely fail a second time.
signatures alone done mean anything with stuff like this. you gotta remember, if folks
that can afford to live there already want it, they are pulling strings too.
if you as the group of local shave no pull in the town committee, your pretty much screwed. draw as much attention as possible from folks, groups, business, and the likes that have pull, the power to expose, and interest to help you.

We are getting a groundswell of support from our FB site and many dozens of people have agreed to join the protest walk on Earth day on Good Friday The local media are being alerted on Monday and I just wrote a scathing rebuke by email to the council where I threatened with the national media-which I'll be doing Monday.I have already notified The Canadian Nature Conservancy and The Canadian Wildlife Federation as well as CPAWS as I'm a member of all 3 environmental groups.I will be looking for a way to get in touch with famed scientist/environmentalist Dr. David Suziki as this is the type of issue that gets his blood boiling. If anyone is concerned enough to write please write council here: The Town Of Witless Bay, P.O. Box 130,Witless Bay,NL. Canada A0A 4K0 or go to the first post of this thread for the phone No. and email address.I'm sure they'd be taken aback if they got letters from all over the world.

It's far from being a city....there's only about 1100 people living here.
