My first guitar was an old acoustic my grandpaw got out of the attic and put some Black Diamond strings on and gave it to me with a Mel Bay chord book,it had belonged to my uncle who played in the mid/late '50s....this was sometime in the early '60s.

Though this thread is a duplicate of one I started just a while ago, my first guitar was really a pretty good guitar, considering it was 1963. The guitar was a Sears (made by Harmony) Silvertone, double pickup guitar that stayed in tune a whole lot better than my first rhythm guitarist's Framus - total junk, that one.

Here I am (circa 1965) playing that Silvertone through a Sound amp, next to my massive 8x12" speaker cabinet that my dad and I built. Truth be told, I really wish I still had that guitar - I sold it and the Sound amp and my 8x12" cabinet, just before I went into the army in 1969. I knew if I didn't sell it, my brothers would just trash it all.

My first guitar was this strat copy from a company called "Kona." I still have it, just in case my little brother wants to learn. It wasnt too bad. Got the job done.

A Gibson Les Paul for a beginner?

I had an acoustic made of plywood, very hard to play. I hated it. Then I got a secondhand Vester Stage Series strat copy.. surpisingly good quality for a beginners guitar.

The only thing was that they weighed a ton. They were made of plywood.

Mine was a Harmony of the same era and style

Ditto: only 1958 and blond. I later electrified with two DeArmond pickups which I fixed to the top at the neck and the bridge, drilled holes for the volume and tone pots, and snaked them through the F-holes and fixed them through the top. Had a rotary selector switched wired into that circuit. I had actually made a special trip to the old Gretsch factory in Brooklyn to get one of the switches that were used on the 6150's but I couldn't figure out how to wire it up. After that came a 60 Dano double short horn, 2 pickups, and then a '58 Strat.

Man...if everyone's first guitar looked (and played) as good that, more people would stick with it.

You would think so. However we have seen so many 'lost in the attic' or 'stuffed under the bed' garage sale finds. Vintage guitars, hardly played, and snapped up for a song by savvy collectors. I have a 2002 Les Paul Custom Heritage Elegant, which was just such a gift from my wife, and will likely end up as one of those. There is someone in my family who is a likely candidate to inherit it, providing he continues in his music.

My grandson will probably inherit the Gibson my wife gave to me, but it probably won't be in the near future (he is only 2) :P . While I do try to keep it in excellent shape, it does get played just about every day. I did buy a Fender Stratocaster about 6 months later, but I prefer the LP most of the time.

Many of us are multi-instrument owners. I try to rotate them weekly. We have one member whom, if he did that, would hardly play each of his more than once a year. You'll find some of those on http://www.guitarmotel.com. Also have a look at www.xhefriguitars.com. If you every have any questions about the Strat Plus, he's the man.

I've answered these before and it was a Cort X Garry guitar. I sold it like 25 years ago. I finally found a picture of the exact model on Google. Here you go (I thought it was hot stuff at 14!!). I actually just reached out to the guy I sold it to to see if he still had it. I might make him an offer if it did not end up in a dumpster by now.

Our high school would always have a program near the end of our senior year that was called "Senior Will Day" where each senior who wished to would will somthing to one of the up coming classmates. My buddy and I who were both band members built a guitar from a board and toilet seat. We dubed it the Gitoilet and willed it to one of the Jr. class band members and presented it to him on stage.
My first real guitar (years later) was a hock shop Alvarez acoustic and a pretty nice guitar for my first one. I had only had it a few days learning to play when one afternoon I heard a noise inside it when I picked it up. Thinking I must have dropped a pick inside I held it up and shook it and low and behold out came a rattle snake rattler. It's a wonder I didn't drop it and run. I later learned that some of the old timers would place a rattler in the box thinking it would enhance the sound of the guitar.

I can't seem to find a Dano Double Shorthorn which had a pickguard like the one on my guitar. It was much smaller than "The Page" Dano and, remembering that I acquired it sometime in '59, it must have been an early release '60.
