On this day in 1912 the Titanic sank on her maiden voyage.Newfoundland played a role in the disaster as the first distress signal was received by the wireless station in Cape Race about 600 miles North on the Southern tip of the Avalon Peninsula. From there word was forwarded to the Carpathia and other ships in the area and word of the sinking soon went worldwide shocking the world with the news that the "unsinkable"Titanic had gone to the bottom without reaching its destination and with the loss of over 1,000 souls. There are talks now in the works of putting a Titanic museum on the site of that old wireless station as a lasting memorial to the worst marine tragedy in history.

Yes, many. Most of the ships in todays cruise fleets are larger... Carnival, Disney, Royal Carribean, etc.

We're getting a new museum near the site where The Titanic was built sometime in the near future.

I was born on the 18th...Yet another tragedy.

Not as much as certain Austrian's birthday on April 20th 1889 who would grow up to lead a nation and cause unspeakable harm in Europe in the 1930's to mid 1940's.

Edit: Propably should have read Drew's post before I posted

Now you're into a subject area which has been a personal interest of mine for well over half a century. "CC",one of our mates in Belfast, made me aware of an urban renewal project going up at the old Harland & Wolff shipyard. It's called the Titanic Quarter, and anyone interested should Google that. It's quite an eyeopener. Nevin and Guitslinger, of course, know of the Titanic section in the cemetery in Halifax. This Cape Race project is new to me, but of great interest. That photo above, is off a calendar from a life insurance company, a copy of which used to hang, framed, in my study.

Doc
